My 1998 cruiser is blowing white sometimes blue smoke. Replaced air filter and catch can filter about 500 klms ago , stopped for awhile but has started blowing smoke again, any hints on what the problem could be.

Possibly the valve stem seals? Is it worse when you start first thing in the morning?

White smoke could be over fueling, incorrect fuel/air mixture, choke adjustment, or.....

How much smoke & any issues with engine missing/losing power?
We had an old Nissan bus which would lose power, misfire, & then with a backfire put out enough white smoke behind us to block any view - making us a moving smoke screen for a while, would then come good until the next time a few hundred metres down the road. We traced it to an exhaust valve sticking open ..... after the vehicle had not been run for 3 years. Over a week or two & daily outings in traffic free areas it resolved itself & was never a problem again.

ok white smoke is low compression, either valve clearances need doing or if the motor is turbod, its been running too much fuel and has overheated a piston.
BUT before we reco the motor, take the catch can off completely and see if anything changes. IF your motor is breathing heavy, the catch can even clean can be a restriction, if you have plumbed it wrong, you will be sucking oil, if the hoses are not large enough....if if if....so many possibilities, motor goes to top port.
