Just an FYI. I had this phone on the $10 Telstra plan, when, last year, it was stolen. We kept the plan but had the number suspended to prevent others using it, thinking to get another phone. Embarrassingly, we forgot about it (yes, we were still paying the $10 per month!)

I lucked out on getting another 9505A VERY inexpensively, so decided to reactivate. The Telstra shop told me they couldn't give me a SIM as the plan was no longer in place. I pointed out I was still paying and they were still billing.

Long story short(er), I called Telstra credit section, they reinstated the number, I picked up a new SIM and... the phone works perfectly.

Weird... including the fact I've thrown away about $100 in Telstra fees I forgot about! We haven't done any remote trips this year, so didn't think about it. Feel free to call me an idiot...

Cheers,
Mark

Yes - seems to be a little bit random...and if they ramp mine up, I'm out as well. You can still use a Sat phone with no sim for emergencies anyway ...though will probably go with one of those off/on sat phone plans with other companies.

Cheers

My $10 plan was "migrated" to their XS plan in April. Instant end of usability in my 9555 ...

Actually raised a CEO-office complaint. Dude there - while trying to be helpful - was non-technical, so swallowed their tech team's comment that it wasn't possible on the new plan (*), and only a Telstra Satphone Service SIM (0147...) would work. Sent one out to evaluate.

Problem immediately evident was that "normal" mortals' plans didn't include calls TO satellite services on those numbers (unlike the previous "normal" mobile numbers in the satphones) so was pretty pointless.

Dumped Telstra completely, sold the 9555 kit and moved on. In future we'll probably hire when necessary.

(*) The reality is that the "new XS plan SIM" - or any other SIM - is limited ONLY by the call routing tables that Telstra set up. They are what determine whether a SIM can call a satphone using an 04... number, and what that satphone can call when it connects to their call switching/routing centre.

I used to have a $10 plan, when the sim was replaced it no longer worked properly. I was told that 4G SIMs are not enabled for sat phones.

Anyway I use this guy now.https://www.ozsatelliterentals.com.au/

He will rent SIMs for $18 per week min of 1 week. Calls out are $3 per min and calls in are free.

Very good service, no connection.

Very strange, Tony. The SIM I was given is just a standard SIM card. They didn't ask about what phone it was going into. As I said, it worked perfectly, calls in and out.

I think it's simply a case of a large organisation not having everyone on board, so some will let things slip, others won't.

Whether this changes soon, I have no idea.

Cheers,

Mark

After visiting 3 different Telstra shops, none of whom knew anything about satellite plans I contacted the dealer I bought the phone from. They told me the only SIM that will work is one specifically designed for satellites. So no - a normal SIM will not work. They suggested contacting Iridium direct as they had plans. Theses plans are $200/month but you can turn them on and off each month.
So it seems I am stuck with $45/month.

Be aware most Telstra shops are only franchises and there are very few actual Telstra shops.

.
The Telstra Partner near me knows the products and has been very helpful to me on several occasions. More than I can say for the Telstra Shop near me.
Cheers
