Hi,
I have a 1990 GQ Nissan Patrol 4.2 non turbo diesel and its auto. The problem is that the
radiator gets hot as the fliud level dosnt from the over flow bottle dosnt return into the
radiator. It happens after every 200klms approx or more on the open road around town it is ok. It done it 6 months ago and was told it was the cap so I put a new one on. Now its done it again so I put another new cap on. Making sure its the right pressure and double valve so it can return back into the
radiator. Its still doing it. I just been to Doogara from Mandurah.and return in 4 days and I had to top up the
radiator 3 times and each time the overflow bowl was full and overflowing. I dont know what to do now any suggestions please or if you have had the same problem.
George

Hi George,
Might pay to
check the condition of the hose from the
radiator to the overflow bottle. If its gone soft, got a hole in it or just leaking at the connections, when the radiaotr cools down and trys to suck the water back, it will only suck air or collapse the hose instead.
Cheers
Captain

Hi George,
You have a number of things to
check.
1)
Radiator cap and seals (Must be in good condition and soft in order to have a vacuum to pull the water back into the engine when it cools)
2) The Plastic elbow cap on the expansion bottle. (It is very common for these to crack and suck air instead of water)
3) Expansion bottle dip tube. (These swell and also suck air around the fitting)
4) Last but the worst..... Head gasket failure or cracked head. (Do this
test... remove the
radiator cap, allow the engine to idle until hot and top up the
radiator till level with the filler cap. Increase the idle speed and watch for small champagne type bubbles. If these appear then have the head pressure tested.)
Hope #4 is not the case but I have seen it a lot.
Regards Derek.

Sorry to say that I had the same problem with my Toyota, I had a cracked head that took an xray to find, even passed a co2 and pressure
test by a
radiator specialist. Took four weeks to find and in the end the only way was to pull of the head and have it xrayed.
If you find this is the case have your injectors checked as it was faulty injectors that caused the issue. I did not and 2 months afte getting the head fixed I had have an engine rebuild after no5 pot failed with a hole in it.
good luck

Oh Stewy,
I'm a bit concerned now as I read in a work manual that stated it may be the problem. Going to try the over flow pipes first. If it is the head what is better get
mine recon or buy a exchange and does anybody have a approx idea of this last case scenario the dollars and where close to Mandurah.
Thanks
From stressed out George
