A woman I work with has just returned from a holiday in Asia. At one point they were in a small village on the Laotian side of the Laos/Vietnam border. They viewed all the domestic and wild animals for sale in the market, then climbed a large hill next to the village to see the temple at the top. On the way back down again they saw a very old local couple slowly trekking up towards them carrying a large bag. They stopped for a chat, and eventually enquired about the big bag. The couple opened the bag and showed them a very large lizard (monitor/goanna type). Asked why they were taking it up the hill the old couple replied 'We bought it in the village, we are carrying it to the temple to release it in memory of Steve Irwin'

Satellite TV gets everywhere, Steve would no doubt have been delighted.

Nice story ... and very unusual for Asia ... because normally they give a damn about their wildlife... they just eat it ...
thanks for posting that

Ah yes. While travelling in Vietnam about 2 years ago, we saw a news item re a new species of fish that had been discovered. The paper included a recipe as a suggestion for the new species. They weren't joking.

Actually, I think saving a life is the highest honour that they can bestow upon anybody.
