I think something has broken inside the war horse. I was tooling around Collie late yesterday, heard a noise like a backfire and then black smoke proceeded to follow me down the street. Oil pressure, temp etc ok but obviously suffering a severe combustion problem.

It's off to the Turbo Dr in Bunbury tommorrow but being one who likes to be prepared, does any body have any info where to purchase the new motors of this type advertised for abour $9K complete last year. Rang Toyota and their price is $11K incl GST

Any help gladly accepted.

I saw Ballarat Toyota ads in the classifieds at much lower than $9k last year.

I had mine rebuilt by Hines in Nedlands. Running great 1 year later and getting 12.9 litre per 100k $4800 plus installation and pump rebuild which I did myself

Ross,

Thanks for that.

Will pay them a visit when I get to Perth next week. At the moment it may simply be overfueling but have to wait for the experts to decide.

CMI in Adelaide had a brand new 1Hz long motor- on their floor. Can't remember the price, but I thought it was very cheap. Phone 1800882618 and find out.

Thanks Phil

Have just put the phone down to them and yes they have a couple in stock and at a similar price I mentioned for last year specials.
May be a bit of mucking around with some of the add ons, hydraulics etc but the knowledge I need to make some decisions.

Thanks for the info

Ross,

I just don't really know at this stage.

Everything sounds ok, idles normally, seems to have power but at low revs or on take off emits black cloud before the revs build and then smoke disappears.

There are no expensive noises coming from under the bonnet so am a bit perplexed.

I dropped a valve seat on the marine diesel in my launch years ago and that did make an expensive noise however if this has been caused by excessive heat from the turbo and burnt the valve, the results may be a bit more sinister in it's presentation with gradual losses in combustion which may seem ok at higher revs but become more evident at idle and low revs..

Grumpy Karl

If I may call you that - LOL :-) !!!

I had thought of that idea but some of the locals here in Collie advised me to stay away from there and probably don't wish to elaborate on that further here so probably best to plod along and source the problem before opening the wallet to far.

There is a fair bit invested in this truck and really can't be bothered setting up another one, as in new, so in the short term need to find a cause then a solution.
If the worst is realised, I would still be tempted to buy a new motor as I will at least know it's history and all it's bad habits can then be attributable to me.

I have been down the engine reconditioning road once on a BMW and it was extremely expensive and an ultimate result a disaster in reliability. Sold it 6 months later abd burnt heaps.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah - I have heard that some of the after sales service is a bit on the bad side; however, I personnaly haven't had anything to do with them, but I was told by a member of my 4WD club who has one of their V8 in his Patrol that they were always keen on off loading the trade ins.

I've never had any probs with Brunswicks. I've always found 'em to be honest and give good advice. Any issue with my Chev has always been dealt with professionally and promptly. Being an ex-truck mechanic myself enables me to spot a "tosser" a mile away.

However, my experience with 2 Toyota dealers, a Honda dealer, a Holden dealer and more than a few used car dealers have been exactly the opposite. i wouldn't take a billy cart into those places.

If there is no noise,no overheating and it idles smooth it maybe something in the fuel pump which is a whole lot cheaper.

If its a compression problem related to a piston or piston ring there would be fuming from the oil filler cap and dipstick tube.

I thought about buying a used 1HZ from Brunswick diesel but they have all been owned by drivers who thought the 1HZ didnt have enough power.
I always imagine those types as those who always have their foot flat to the floor.

As some have already said, don't be too hasty in assuming the worst. Have the motor/head stripped down / diagnosed and then have an independent inspection done as well for piece of mind.

Are you a member of RAC WA? If so they may be able to assist in the inspection and advise if they have an office in the area.

Haven't been a member since I became single again, if you get my drift so will assume slow and steady as she goes in the diagnostics before the wallet comes out.

Hi John,
before you spend the big bucks make sure its not only a sticking injector. Had the same happening on my 80 series. New injectors fixed it. It got 480000 klicks now and I'd take it around Australia tomorrow.
Cheers, Udo

Now that's a response I can live with..........

Eliminate the obvious before descending into doom & gloom. Will report back when I know more.

Thanks for the heads up :-)

These might be a little harder to find, but the 1HD-T was the best, gruntiest engine I have ever run in a 75 series, including V8 petrol and diesel. Plus you get a bigger clutch (Isuzu from memory) and it still looks factory. Bolts straight in and provided big end bearings are checked, the horror sories about the bottom ends letting go, have a lot to do with driving style and service history. Worth a look at.

This is "sight unseen" advice, but of the motor is still idling OK, if the oil pressure is still OK, if the motor isn't overheating, if it still pulls away with no strange noises, if it's not misfiring, then there's a bloody good chance that it's not terminal.

I'd have a guess at a blown turbo.

Thanks all for your input and taken on board.

I hope to have an answer when they have compression tested, dynoed etc etc.

If its the turbo blown, that could be interesting as less than two year old Safari and the pump was overhauled when that was installed.

Will keep you posted when I know more.

Thanks for all the help
