I am just watching a short program on
Foxtel about the Redex trials in the '50s. Across Australia in VWs, FJ Holdens, Ford Customlines, and we won't go out there without our 4WDrives, our recovery gear, HF radios, GPSs.
What a bunch of ladies we've turned into.
And imagine the strife if we decided to chuck out a stick of gelly whenever we felt like it?
Gelignite Jack ! There's no one like you these days. You've been regulated out of the Australian character.

My late grandfather competed in the
Ampol Trials. Is there much footage as the only thing our family has is a couple of photo's. If there is it might be worth trying to track down a copy.
Cheers

Tennant Creek.

Those old vehicles were tough, simple, and had good ground clearance.
We took our 84
Tarago to lots of
places across the top end that my work crummydore would not be able to go.

Back in 1998 we took a short cut from
Coober Pedy to
Ceduna, there was a road sign just out of Coober that said to
Ceduna and as we were on our way
home and thought it would cut off hundreds of ks we took it, (how green we were back then) As we were in SA (a state not known for it's signage) that sign was the last we saw until we hit the Eyre highway at (god knows where), we turned and twisted here and there, came across a lake and had to do a big detour, it was rough, very rough, took us most of the day but we made it and we were in an ED falcon. When we got
home we looked up a map to see where we went ( it was spur of the moment decision, we didn't need maps until then) and the tracks showed '4wd track'. We still have our ED and it is holding together without any rattles or squeaks, the speedo is showing over 300.000ks and all is still original.
Cheers

Hi Muddy doe, No it wasn't Googs, we didn't turn off of the Stuart H'way for quite some Ks, even though it took us most of the day we did take it fairly slow over the corrugations as the car was fairly shaking, there was no sand dunes to speak of just small hills. We wound our way through there somewhere, it was a great drive.
Cheers

Gday
Jack Murray was a real nice gentleman, he would stand and chat with those that asked the rite questions. He used to visit the garage that i was employed in when i was in
Sydney in the early sixties.

Well Bushie,
I know a couple of blokes who still like to drop the odd bangstick in the bush. They just don't advertise like Jack did.
They are still out there, just now they are iresponsible hoons rather than national heroes.

Lights AND sounds for those outback loos ?
Nothing wrong with responsible larrakins. They are still around, although almost legislated out of existance.
Some of the charity bashes embody the same kind of spirit....and spirits :))

I grew up on a
farm on the Eyre Hwy. We used to sit on the edge of the road and watch them all go by. Lot of the drivers would throw out posters and all sorts of things for us. Pity never saved anything. Probably worth a fortune now.
