Hi all
My Parents are about to embark on an epic adventure around OZ and asked me if I could get them a satellite setup for their van.
This is what I came up with and though others might be interested.

Dreambox 500s clone recievever $170
65cm folding dish $50
LNB $25
Sat finder $22
Cable

Some cool things about this setup.
The receiver is very small about 25cm wide but best of all runs of 12 volts. The reciever also works with both their Foxtel card and Aurora card (very few boxes will work with a foxtel NDS card probably works with Austar as well but havent tested it)

Havent worked out how I will be mounting the dish yet it is currently clamped to a pole in my front yard for testing but might end up getting a tripod, have seen them for about $70 on ebay.

The dreambox is a linux based reciever you need to install different software on it depending what you want to do so its not the easiest to set up, but once everything is installed and configured just turn it on and off it goes.

Get this though, I can plug the dreambox into a laptop (via a network cable) and actually record programs to the laptop to watch later.

Have been expeirmenting with this box a bit and have managed to pick up Optus C1, D1 B3 and B1 these are all different satellites with some very interesting channels.

Most of the gear was found on ebay.
Cheers

Hello Groove,
One question .... why? Is it for TV or email or both? I have survived several trips around OZ (I wouldn't quite call them epic adventures but I know your tongue is firmly planted in your cheek). If this will add something to my next trip I'm very interested - particularly if there's a safety aspect to it.
Regards,
Mick

Simply for TV no safety aspect involved.

Although you could argue that for the sake of my Mum not going stir crazy and beating up dad, having a few TV channels to watch could be a safety option.

As for it being an epic adventure at their age for them it is. They are not going anywhere too remote really.

Thanks Groove and I hope they have a great time. I thought there might have been facility for broadband internet somewhere in there. Just back from a trip to Longreach and Winton and there were ads being run which claimed "if you can see the sky you can now have broadband" They'll be surprised at how many of us caravanners are in the over 70 bracket so I hope they're not too phased by the "adventure".

Well done. Your parents will be well looked after. As for mounting the dish, it doesn't have to be very sophistiated. A length of 1500 50mm tube fixed to the 'A' frame with a clamp is all that's needed. So long as it's secure and unable to move from the chosen satellite. Just goes to show, you don't have to spend a fortune to get F.T.A. satellite reception. As for the cynical comments from the previous response, just ignore them and they'll eventually give up and find something else to play with.

it's not FTA. They have a fox sub and Aurora.

A 12v Strong would be a simpler solution and get a Austar sub instead. I've not used a dream so can't compare on ease of use.

Yes but the strong wont allow them to use their foxtel subscription, which they already have.

I have a 12V Strong (4654x) that I use for Austar without any problems.

The strong box will work fine with Austar but they dont work with Foxtel. Austar and Foxtel may have the same content but each use a different encryption system.

The strong receiver has and embeded irdeto cam, Austar uses irdeto encryption, but foxtel uses NDS encryption. No other box will work with the foxtel digital card.

Also my parents cant get an Austar subscription because they live in a foxtel area.
