We went across The Border Track with a group of about 15cars last weekend,, as in the track which links Pinnaroo to Bordertown,, you know the one with all the soft dunes as such...
Well anyway,, at the ½way point we came across 4 vw combi vans that were only 2 wheel drive,,, yes TWO WHEEL DRIVE,,, as in rear wheel drive.................. No low range, no transfer case, no locking hubs,,,,,, just standard everyday combies,,,, and they were doing it well.....
Going over dune after dune after dune....
2-4psi in their tyres....
Hats off to you guys.... Well done.....

PS. And so what that they were hammering the tracks more than 4x4's,, it was a great sight.

Rear engined VW are a much underrated offroad thing.
Old Ferry Porsche designed 'em that way.
It's a combination of low weight over front wheels (don't dig in)
Good wheel articulation at rear and all the weight hung off the transmission.

Read a story once where after WWII the exchange rate was 1 x VW Kuebelwagen to 2 x 4x4 Jeeps. Reason being that the VW was superior in just about every way.

On a personal note I have driven standard beetles to many places I now know are only accessible to fully accessorised 4WD's

Ah look mate... you know full well you can't go _serious_ off road (whatever that is?) without a lifted Landcruiser or Patrol with a front mounted winch and, ideally, some stickers.

Funny you should ask ...
I went out of my way to watch these guys on the last few dunes,,, and they had trouble like a few of the 4x4's we were with...
But they made it after letting their pressures down to 2 - 4psi and had some people on the back for extra weight....
After each shot they were letting their engines cool right down as they said the air cooled engines were getting a bit hot and robbing power...

Just goes to show, doesn't it? You probably don't need the big truck with all the bells and whistles just some common sense and the spirit of adventure.
