Saw a pretty darn Averadge bit of escorting the other saturday.
Busy Saturday and i was coming down kalamunda road from the hills and went to turn left at Hawtin road where the maida vale BP is.
No sooner had i turned the corner than a pilot drove up indicating for me to pull over.
Now there wasnt much room after the intersection to where he had blocked it (he had it blocked after Maida vale road where I wanted to go)
radio comms suggested they had little idea where the load was so hawtin road was blocked for a while. unsuspecting car drivers were turning in then had no where to go.
finally the load showed up. i couldnt believe it huge load they were sneaking down a local 2 lane road (one lane each way) I assume to avoid proper procedures along the roe highway.
it was taking out the centre island sighns and in a few spots would have taken out people or vehicles up on the footpath in some spots if they were unfortunate enough to be there.
Radio chatter just centred around the idiocy of the confused drivers trying to park out of the way whereever they could
- just because they were trying to avoid roe higway which was the proper place for the load

Dave I live in Forrestfield just off Hale Rd and that route is used all the time for huge loads. (For you out of towners - Hale Rd and Hawtin Rd follow on from each other in a straight line, change at the round-about.) It's the only route they can take to dodge the bridges on Roe Highway. It can be a real pain especially Saturday and Sunday mornings. You get some real morons. Best I saw was a load that had got the Tonkin Hwy/Hale Rd traffic lights wedged between the prime mover and articulated trailers at the back. They had to get in some super lift cranes to shift the truck and load. You think that didn't cause a few delays.

Hmm Il have a look next time but from memory the only bridge along the roe at that stretch is the maida vale road Bridge which is pretty darn big. I have seen quite a few big loads heading down that stretch of the Roe

Problem is Dave that the height under the bridge is very low (load wise anyway). I also think that the load limit for the Roe/Tonkin bridge may not be high enough for some loads.
Bundy and or Doug will definately put us straight on that one.

We have that problem in SA too... not enough Dougs.

Was coming down the Nat Hwy 1 through the hummocks in a windy section near Lochiel from memory and come across the escort vehicle then the police escorts who were doing the full 80km.

I pull over and I swear within 200m more police escorts and then the load. He has nowhere to go, was doing the full 80 km/h and must have missed me by 50cm.

I got abused for complaining on Ch 40, and then the cops didn't want to know me when I complained to their escort section on the telephone.

I think the escort laws and behaviours need some modification. They think they own the road and can be cavalier because of the flashing lights in front, when one day something nasty is going to happen.

Andrew wondering what he would look like with a house wrapped around him.

Hi Andrew, I know some are a bit forceful but just like you have a job to get done.

I know you come around the corner and think shiet but this guy driving the truck and the Escort drivers have probably already passed 500 cars just like you and knows if safe or not.

I have escorted a few loads as well and you should see what I see. Some people just ignore you completely. Then panic at the last minute.

I know there is some DH Escorting sometimes as well just puting my 2 bobs worth in.

I'm ducking for cover now.

Kind Regards Scoof..

I don't think this was being forceful... just plain reckless. There is no way he could see around the bends. His only excuse was that the trees were not trimmed, and that it was the job of the escorts to keep 500m ahead of him, and that other traffic had crept in between them and him, and that it all got bunched up.

He needs to slow for the conditions just like anyone else.

This was a max width house, and the escort should have told the guy that the twisting winding hill needed him to slow.

For sure I've seen people ignore the escorts, but I get the feeling not quite enough thinking is going into the escorting responsibilities, in general - and I think the cops were as much to blame in this situation.

I must check that out.

Cheers Scoof.

We STILL get quite a few truckies attempting to navigate Galston Gorge despite multiple signs, flashing lights, etc etc.

To put a visual on it. This is a 150tonner the
y are taking down what is little more than a suburban street The road here is only divided due to the Turn off for Maida Vale Road
oesnt look bad but hoseparked carswere the first round the corner. Because they had no idea where the load was so they sat there tryingto wave people over for way too long all pull over spots got filled so unsuspecting people were turning down the road and had no where to go

Classic Davoe.....that's one of our trucks!! They would have picked it up from the Welshpool yard. Don't know if that explains the direction they were taking.....don't know Perth real well.

And the body should have been removed that way the SEC would not have to come out and lift the wires up

I was thinking the same thing. Usually see the tray on a separate low loader.

mm No it Wasn't me either.........but i know the people involved...........no to start with..........routes are permitted out by.western power for these oversized loads...........eg as to were there coming from and going to...and the way to get there as to power line heights....bridges and such...........if the road is to be closed .for the load ........we sometimes do go out a long way ..and cannot see the load..this is to stop all oncoming traffic.......well try to as there are always the few idiots that ignore you ..drive round you and just don't think the rules apply to them.....now these people get a rude shock when there then faced with a 5.5 or over load covering most of the black top...........ooooooo now ive no were to go (they say).....there side roads are not to sneak past things ....there given to us as the route to take.......its not a easy job ..as people just think your in there way.....you wouldn't believe some of the things we see car drivers do. to get around.a load ..only to be stopped at the next lights .the same as us...........Andrew..i agree the laws need to be changed ..this is a ongoing thing ....as each state has its own laws governing the movement of oversized loads...and piloting laws...........should be 1 law for all states.......

Interesting Bundy Boy... hey, do you have any room for a couple of extra lights there?

How competent do you find the Police Escort part of the act? I get the feeling that they don't really add much value except the pretty colour of the flashing lights.

No Police escort here and not much planning from what i was hearing on the radio. Classic example was i sat there for 10 minutes watching the chaos behind me and I only needed to go to where the truck was in the first picture to pull a right,
Its OK In a 4by but further towards forrestfield there is BA room for 2wd to be pulling out of the way.
If it came from welshpool then surely Aberththey road - GEHB would have been better.
Its the first time I have seen a 785 transported whole.
