Hi all. I'm looking at buying a
Uhf radio and am a bit confused about what exactly i need. The more i read about them ( both on this site and others ) the more confused i become. information overload i think...lol
can anyone recommend a supplier / installer in the
Sydney area that I can go and discuss my needs with, I think / hope the 1 on 1 explanations will help.
I don't need something that i can contact the space station with, just general purpose travelling, possibly emergency as I will be travelling solo throughout August, although not too far off the beaten track...

Glad u don't wish to contact a "space station"
UHF is line of sight, so a max (aprox) of 20 km can be expected with a car mounted unit (5 watt),repeaters can help to extend this range.
You can also get 5 watt hand held units.
There are cheap .5 watt + units around but you can expect as little as 1 km range with these, great for the kids at the beach though,

Sydney I know, but there appears to be a bit of very keen competition going on between
Prestige Communications (
Perth)
and
Contact Communications (Barossa region, SA)
Both are offering free express delivery to your door, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find better prices anywhere...
