We, an early 40's Deaf couple planning a long trip mid next year to the centre of Oz and the rest for the first time. There are so many posts quering about radios, FHM and listening gadgets, and so on. We have to go without these as they will be useless to us. Is there anything that we may not be aware of that you have come across that would be useful for us or any ideas? We will have laptop with GPS.
Maybe we should buy the new product "SPOT" messenger instead if we ran into trouble or flag one of hopefully youse nice EO'ers down to radio on for us (have to hope it won't take days till you arrive, hee hee) Or will the special remote mobile phones work with texting out there ? Thanks for your help. Jules :)

G'day Jules,

The Motorola 9505A series satphone used on the Iridium (Telstra) network is capable of sending and receiving SMS messages.

Hi there Jules,

The importance of this other stuff would depend on how remote you planned to be travelling. A GPS tells you where you are, but a map tells you what is around you. So maps would be important.

If you're sticking to mainish highways and well travelled roads, then you can rely on the presence of other people as a backup. Even standard NextG services will work in many places so a NextG phone will give you texting ability in many populated places and surrounding areas.

If you're getting really remote, then you should probably get a sat phone that uses Iridium with texting and have a good knowledgable person who will take your texts and act on them.

In short, it is hard to say what you would need unless we know more about where you are going.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Andrew, I dont agree with your comments about Next G. In our recent trip through south west Qld SA Innamincka, Tib Broken Hill & back to Sydney, We lost coverage on both the Next G phones ( one Telstra & one Optus)at Bourke and had some coverage for the Telstra in Tib, but did not get full cover until Broken Hill.

So as you say, only in populated areas.

Not trying to have a go at you, just our recent experiences

I think you're agreeing violently Vince...

Isn't that what I said?

Certainly works in Bourne, Cobar, Broken Hill, Yunta, Wilcannia, Brewarrina, Walgett, Moree, and even worked in Tilpa... and that was without antenna, so if you had an antenna I think it would be even better. Other strange places were Yuendumu and Billiluna.

as I say "texting ability in many (perhaps most) populated places and surrounding areas".

Optus does not use the Next G Network and won't be much use outside of the Metro areas.

We had coverage at Tibbooburra and Mad Cowz had coverage a lot of the way from White cliffs westward. You will only get Next G though and that is Telstra. Optus doesn't use the Next G 850 mhz network....

HF & UHF not much use to u. Mobiles do NOT work outside of the larger towns. As stated above, sat phones are ms capable but thats about it.
I would go for an EPIB before a SPOT. The EPIB will not have to go via a third party overseas, it will go direct to the Australian search & rescue system.
Hop[e this helps

Hi Jules
You say deaf but what about speech or gutteral noise?? You might not be able to hear the message but if you get into trouble then if you can radio out others might hear. My Uncle & Aunty were both deaf and speechless but had a phone so that they could ring their kids in an emergency and while they could not convey the emergency the kids at least knew that there was a problem and could respond.
You will know where you are so, if there is a problem, as long as you keep transmitting then a knowing person will be able to hone in to a certain degree.
And the other more basic suggestion would be to get a 12 volt plug in magnetic base light (red/blue/orange??) so that in the (hopefully) unlikely event of a real problem, put the light on the roof of the vehicle and turn it on and all the nice EO'ers and others will pull up to se what is going on-- we are all inqusitive after all...

HI Rusty,
Thanks for your reply. yes we are profoundly deaf and can just make noise into the thing but won't be hearing the response so we won't have an idea if we are answered. What did your aunt and uncle use to ring their kids with ? a satphone?
Good idea about the light on the roof eh.

Hi Jules,

Something else you could consider is an external antenna for your phone (not all can do this) or even using a NextG modem with an external antenna. These increase the coverage considerably from the standard internal antenna, though will not ensure coverage everywhere.

Cheers, db..This is one of the antenna sites for the NextG modem I use.
