OK..I have downloaded Shonkymaps to my SD card on my nuvi 760.

Question...to use it, do have to choose the SD card some how or will automatically do it?....

Or...how do I use the shonky maps?

Cheers

Oh where to start!

You can't just put the file on an SD card and use it.

You have to download a bit of software (think it is called IMG2GPS) and this then creates the required Garmin formatted file that can then be used on the Nuvi. Been a while since I did it to my 660.

There are a few places on the net that explain step by step how this is done. I think Doug T has it on his pages as well (probably a link in his member profile).

Takes a bit to get the head around it the first time but is not too difficult. Put aside a night or two!.

Cheers

Go Tools -- Settings --- Map --- Map info and then tick the maps you want to read.
If I can ask a question; have you tried to read any MP3 music files with your 760? The reason i ask is I cannot get mine to play music. It is taking forever to get answers from Garmin. I emailed their Australian help desk and got a reply from their UK office. Seems they only want to talk about basic settings and no more. May have to send it back for a replacement

and I thought this was going to be easy!!!

OK..I went through Tools...settings...map..map info.....but the only one to choose from is the standard 'City Navigator NT 2008'...nothing else to choose from!

To answer your question...yes I have MP3 music files and they work very well. On a recent trip North of WA I used the FM tuner and it didn't miss a beat.

My music is on the SD card. I just go to Media player and press the play button. No worries.

You will need a Mapsource program to transfer the Shonkymaps onto the SD card

Once you have done that you will need to untick the City nav 2008 map box

The Shonky website says it should work with one of the following programs:

A LICENSED version of Garmin "Trip and Waypoint Manager", MapSource or CityNavigator.

I think the 760 comes with City Navigator. I've got Mapsource with my GPSMAP60Cx and and have had np problems getting Shonky onto it.

Hi Andrew , once you have downloade the free mapsource program you can also down load

Mapsource Tutorial

This will explain on how these maps get transfered onto your SD card

I have never heard of a Licenced copy of mapsource before , there is no unlock code for it.

The Nuvi's don't come with any cd's , only the higher end handheld recievers do

The only drana's your going to have if you don't understand using a PC otherwise this process is simple

Skip

I've downloaded the maps to my SD card successfully, just can't see how to access them through the GPS now.

I ave gone to my settings, and map info but the only one in the list is the standard City Navigator????

Hi Andrew,

when you plug your Unit to the PC what files are in the SD card , you should have a Garmin folder with gmapsupp.img in there

Try transferring a few maps again also i have heard of some SD cards not reading onto the unit

I have my Shonkymaps in my main memory but i have bluechrts on my SD cards which i have just found has gone missing / lost

Cheers Skippy
