Has anyone had any experience with one of these "Fred's arm" awning things http://www.bta4wd.com/category898_1.htm ?

They seem like a great idea to get a large awning over the tailgate. They are a bit expensive though ($390). I don't have an awning yet and for the awning+arm cost I could almost get one of the new rhino/oztent foxwing awnings ... but they are as yet unavailable and unproven.

I use a Fred's Arm mated to an Opposite Lock roof rack and an Open Sky awning on my 105 series Land Cruiser.
Had it about six months with lots of use and couldn't be happier with it.

I think it would be cheaper to buy two separate awnings wouldn't it? ARB make a 2.5m and a 2.1m awning so you can have one on the side and one on the back.

Cheers,

Jason.

It would be a similar price - but the normal rear awnings are quite a bit smaller (eg. 1.5m x 2m) and don't provide much coverage. So this arm seems like the ideal way to have a large awning out the back of the car and over the tailgate area, with minimal fuss.
