HI I would like to run a portable A/C unit of a 2Kv geni, i am confused the sales guy said it would run the A/C but he was not sure if the l e d display /timer/ switch would be damaged by the geni, (I may need some sort of power smoothing device) any ideas any one?

Depends on the quality of the generator. The Honda Inverters give a nice clean sine-wave output and are very well regulated. I am currently running $500,000 worth of sensitive electronic equipment in our TV outside broadcast truck off of a couple of Honda EU65i's (6.5kva inverters).

Having said that, I doubt very much if you would damage the display on a regular generator. Most electronic equipment in use today is fairly forgiving of power input due to running switchmode power supplies. The only time we have ever had trouble running equipment from a gennie was when it was an old combo welder / generator. Some of the gear refused to run, and while the RMS voltage was correct the waveform out of it was a square wave with a series of high-voltage spikes.

I recently sough proffesional advice over basically the same issue
For digital displays you require a sine wave generator otherwise damge can occur
Honda Kipor are two that Im aware of that comply

I'd argue with that advice, and I have a fairly long background in electronics. Did they give you a basis for the claim? Sure, the odd bit of equipment may have an issue but I would shy away from blanket claims.

Not an expert
just sine wave
Also inquired about an inverter for running off of batteries and was told the same a sine wave inverter

yeah well to me as a novice they did
they said unless you get a sine wave generator or sine wave inverter (not modified) you run the risk of damaging any digital displays
To me that meant in my satelitte decoder which has a digital display

My Honda 2KVA Inverter would not start our Air Command Air con....2.4KVA Yamaha did and runs fine....but stays of max output.

Inverter Generators will be prefectly fine...better than domestic power.
