I see young Jessica Watson who is attempting to be the youngest person to sail solo around the world is due to cross the equator tomorrow morning, Thursday 19th November.

Its been 30 days now since Jess departed Sydney and after crossing the equator and continuing north for another 200 NM she will round the island of Kiribati before heading south to round Cape Horn.

She's doing well and her blogs are well worth reading, here is the link to her web site.

John

I wonder if see has to rub her bum with grease like the Royal Australian Navy sailors do when they cross the equator..... LOL

She is doing well, and if and when she makes it she will be OUR hero..

Cheers

Richard

Richard
Don't the sailors rub grease on their bums at times other than crossing the equator?? ;-)

She has had amazing weather so far and has done around 2000 miles, so she has a long way to go and hasn't been tested yet. Sounds like she gets a bit lonely every now and then, which is no surprise. Hope she makes it safely.

I guess the loneliness is part and parcel of the challenge??
For someone so young its a challenge that she seems to be revelling in.

JESSICA CROSSES THE EQUATOR
Thursday, 19 November, 2009 (8.00am AEDT)

We are delighted to advise that Jessica has called in to confirm that she officially crossed the equator at 7.17am (AEDT) and entered the northern hemisphere.

As this is a Southern Hemisphere voyage there are a few key targets that Jessica must achieve to qualify for around the world status. She must depart and arrive from the same port, cross all lines of longitude and cross the equator entering into the northern hemisphere at least once and round the southern landmarks of South America and South Africa.

So the equator target is now achieved!

All of Jessica’s family and shore team are extremely proud of her achieving this significant landmark of her journey.

Jessica will share the moment with her supporters on her blog later today, including pictures she captured during the crossing.

Go Jess!

I must say at first i kind of knocked her for doing what she is doing. I had my doubts and my theories. Then i thought stuff it, she is out there doing ths cause of people like me, people who think she wont be able to do it. But afetrreading her blogs and realising just how much technology she has on board its entirely possible. I mean come on internet and telephones, what 16 year old girl needs any more then that. She probably thinks she is still at home and is loving the fact that she doesnt have to go to school. Good on her, i wish her the best of luck. The only drama i have though, is with the worldwide interest and fame that she has gotten, she is very very easy pickings for Pirates. They know her path all they have to do is wait. I hope they have some sort of plan in place for this. Apart fom that, i believe she has more balls then anyone i know.
