I have a Chinese made 3 KVA
Generator a copy of the Honda & Yamaha Models. It;s very noisy. Is there anyway I can cut down the noise factor (apart from throwing it in the river!!) I thought of putting a Honda muffler on it or is the noise from the motor? Before I get abused I run it for a short time to charge batteries every 4 days or so during the day so as not to annoy others. Ideas would be appreciated, thanks

How about making a box large enough to take the genny with enough room around it to allow airflow and cut a few air vents in it. Line the box with sound absorbing material. This is available from companies that specialize in noise suppression technology. You would need to make provision for the exhaust to exit the box.
Cheers Pop

What about a bit of stainless steel pipe from the exhaust to a bucket of water, wouldn't make much noise then.

G'day OREJAP, to muffle my 1 kva
generator I have lined four suitably sized sheets of 3 ply with the the styrene foam sheeting the
generator was shipped in. The exhaust end is left uncovered but pointing away from habitation and the panels leant against the
generator frame with one on top. The next refinement is to make a folding flat pack of the muffler box by connecting the panels with short lengths of leather or seatbelt webbing. Happy Days, Farmboywa.

inlet air noise is as big a problem as exhaust noise. If you
check Yamaha and Honda small generators you will see how much trouble they go to silence air inlet noise.
If your cheap Chinese
generator was a copy it would be quiet.
