In the December issue of 4 x 4 Australia in the generator comparison they list the Evoy 1600w-hrs fuel cell at $6600 & the 2200w-hrs at $8400.

There were references on the web to about $6,000. It all seemed a bit speculative and no one I could find had actually used one.

I have looked up the specs and they look good but question is really about how have they worked in practise.

It would seem the alcohol is supplied to some grade or other of purity, meaning expensive.

I thought some traveller may have dabbled with one, perhaps while overseas.

Ouch!, Thanks Peter. But not as bad as a couple of years ago when some maybe cruder ones were about $20,000. Think I'll still save for my diff-lock!

Unless my calcs are off it will use just over 9 litres a day to provide the 130 ah at 70mls per ah which at $60 for 10L of fuel is pretty expensive operating costs.

The Kimberly Karavan has a fuel cell, check out their website.

Your calcs are correct, however i believe the numbers provided on eco-camper may be incorrect ;) The Webasto website mentions 0.9L/kWh which equates to 1.44L for the 1600Wh :) Seems more reasonable.

Andrew, your figure would be consistent with a consumption of 70 mL/hr (rather than 70 mL/Ahr).
Unfortunately fuel cells are never likely to be cheap while expensive platinum or palladium catalysts are used.

yes i did come across these when i was googling something else 18 months agobut could'nt find out at that stage what they operated on and was concerned it may have been urainium but thats not the case as its methanol
but the price at the time was many thousands so quickly lost interest
they have certainly come down a bit
but am prepared to still keep waiting
like everything thats new
it will eventually come down to a more realistic level

i'll be buying one, saves going out to the state forest and running a vehicle / generator. menthanols cheap enough, in coming years it will get cheaper!!!!
