This will probably seem a silly question to most, but I have been given a lend of a genny to take camping.
I have a duel batt instaled in my hilux, do I simply connect the genny to the duel batt terminals and thats it, or do I have to disconnect anything before I start re-charging?
I will be running a 40 ltr engel and a CPAP machine at night. How long do you think I would need to run the genny each day? Sorry I don't know how many amps these items draw.

Thanks is advance

Wato

The safest way I see is to connect the gennie to the battrey via a decent battery charger using the 240 volt side of it.

I have a battery system set up at my place in the Mallee. Basically I have 2 deep cycle batteries in parallel & a small gennie. Connected to this is an 240V inverter, my Engel fridge & a smart charger.

I start the gennie every 2 days & run it in the afternoon until the batteries are charged. This takes round about 4 to 5 hrs to bring everything up to full charge. I do not disconnect anything from the circuit while the gennie is running & I have not damaged anything yet. By the way I run the Engel on the 12 volt circuit not the 240V.

You will find that the time taken to run the batteries down varies because the loading on the fridge will change due to ambient temps & how often you restock it. Sorry but I cannot help you with the Amp draw on the CPAP machine but the Engel draws 3.5 amps when the compressor runs but like I said the run time will vary.

Cheers
Stu

Sorry it just occurred to me that you have your dual Battery system wired in to your vehicle which is not exactly the same as my free standing system.

Some one here may be able to help you as to whether the vehicle charging system may be damaged if you do this. I would have thought if you have a diode batery isolator it shoud be ok (power cannot flow back through a diode) but if its not then you better ask someone who knows more than me. As for the items actually running off the system while charging well they should be fine.

Hi Wato

Is it a 12V generator like our petrol charger or is it a 240V generator that needs a battery charger connected to it ?

We need the specs of these units to give you an idea of charge times etc.

Regards

This is a petrol powered battery charger. It will connect directly to the battery.

If it is a 240V generator you need a 240V battery charger between the generator and the 12V battery.

You should use a battery charger of at least 20A.

Hi watto and Derek , this may or may not be useful but i just checked out my new cpap machine the specs suggest power usage of 85watts 0.95 amps.
hope that helps a bit.
