Hi all,
What are the best campsites in Litchfield for a relatively quiet stay. Are the 4wd only campsites roomy enough for trailers.
Cheers,
Dave

IMHO all the ones in the park are pretty bad, and get crowded with the "rent a camper "crowd every day.

We found one just outside the park which was run 2 years ago by the caretaker at Wangi falls.
If you proceed another 10Ks? or so out of the park past Wangi you come to a restaurant and attached is a camping ground with spacious grassed sites.

I highly recommend it and would stay there again when and if I go back.( if it has stayed the same)

Hi Dave.
Last July we stayed at the Banyan Tree caravan park.Approx 12km north of Batchelor, past the Rum Jungle turnoff.
A nice quite park with friendly manager & great barra meal.
Cheers.

Best campsite within Litchfield that we enjoyed was Surprise Creek Falls. You have to have a 4x4 to get there. Located on the south exit track.

Hi Tour Boy

I recall the small campground at Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek) was quiet when we visited during the day, and it looked like one you could get a 4wd trailer into.

Due to the campground at Wangi Falls being packed out and not very inviting (it being the only one we could take a caravan into) we went 4 kilometres further to the private park Litchfield Safari Camp and found a nice quiet bush camp on the perimeter of this serviced camp ground, and recommend this for privacy and quiet over the National Park campgrounds. It did not cost much more for the unpowered site and we had the use of full amenities.

Hi Sue

We arrived 12 August, and there was heaps of room to get away from everyone in the unpowered section. Most people chose powered sites which were nice grassy sites around the amenities block, so i don't anticipate a need to book for unpowered any time of the year. We never book anywhere and always find a place. They generate their own power, so the sound of the generator was the only noise we could hear. For those taking a powered site, they charge extra for caravans with air conditioners (which i only found out when asking their fees for my caravan park report). Although it was hot during the day when we were out touring, it was pleasant during the evening so we wouldn't have wanted to use the air con anyway.

Thankyou all for the info.
What would the deepest crossing (Reynolds river?) be on the southern track, we will be there in 2nd or 3rd week of May and have a prado comming with us.

This was the north side of the river when were were there in August and by that time the river wasn't very deep. We were on a 'day trip' and with our long wheel base, decided not to risk the steep climb back as pictured here.

Hi TB, you have got buckleys for the southern track into Litcfield to be open in May. We tried in mid June last year and it was stiil closed. Also at Florence Falls there is a 2WD and a 4WD campsite. We towed our Dove into the 4 and just squeezed in then later on a walk saw that the 2 had plenty of room!!!......W

Hi Tourboy.
Litchfield is lovely.
We rang the Ranger for the conditions of the Reynolds River every third day until we got there. This was late Aug about 2003. They'd had rain. We were warned that there were crocks in it so we didn't want to walk it first.
We were concerned about it as we didn't have a snorkel at that time. It is in a long way so you really don't want to go in that far & have to turn back.
The Ranger had told us the water level on that day & it was O.k...Just.
We entered from the South side & all was well until just before 1/2 way accross and the back drivers side wheel found a very deep hole. We were very lucky to get out as the water got up to the exhaust pipe.
I don't know the condition now. However,I think that The Reynolds in May might be asking a bit too much. It's a very pretty drive though. As for camping spots in the Park, I wouldn't stay in the Park either we stayed just outside & went in for the day trip. The road to twin falls was closed .Take care, safe travels Ma.

Recommend the Litchfield caravan park and camping ground mentioned by others, at the Wangi end. It is only about 4km from the Wangi Falls turnoff. Apart from access to Wangi Falls, there are other lesser known falls and walks at that western end. Litchfield has had a huge amount of rain from cyclone Carlos and the tropical low preceding it, so is pretty wet right now. If the wet continues for the next couple of months, it might be quite a while before all the Litchfield tracks and waterholes open.
