Floods cut off 'vital' <span class="highlight">Bloomfield</span> Crossing

Not good news for the Bloomfield Track, following from the ABC website.

The Cook Shire Council in far north Queensland says a vital road link between Cairns and Cooktown, the Bloomfield Crossing, will be out of use for the wet season.

A large section of the crossing on Cape Tribulation Road was washed away in flooding last week.

Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott says the Department of Main Roads has pledged to build a new bridge but it will not happen for months.

"If we could get something in by the end of this year, we'd be doing very well," he said.

"There's got to be a lot of design done to it, the funding's got to be found obviously, but also the environmental impacts have to be looked at very closely.

"As an interim type measure, Cook Shire's got a transportable bridge which we're hoping will be utilised a bit later in the year.

"I've been up in Cooktown for 17 years and we've probably had four different attempts at putting a causeway and a bridge across there.

"Each time it's been washed away, so we would hope this time it's built big enough, high enough and strong enough to see out the wet seasons."
