Would appreciate any comments on the quality and performance etc. of the following extras for a 2004 dual cab diesel turbo Hilux, comparing sourcing from TJM v's ARB ;
1. ARB canopy v's 3XM as supplied by TJM
2. Long range fuel tank ; ARB 115 litres v's TJM 145 litres
3. Snorkel ; ARB Safari v's TJM ?

Or any other one stop shop recommended suppliers in Melbourne metro.

Thanks, Poitr

Hi poitr

I also have a hilux duel cab, I had an ARB canopy fitted 4 years ago and I have had no problems at all. OK 1 problem, the locks on the windows go dust in them and you could not lock them. I fixed that problem with a small bit of bike tube cut to cover the lock.
Cannot help with the tank or snorkel.

Cheers

Hi Poitr
I have an ARB canopy, 140Litre fuel tank, Safari Snorkel, Heavy duty bull bar, ARB Air compressor and Diff lockers.
Havent had any problems with any of these other than earlier on I had problems with dust stopping the locks on the canopy from working but since I give them a squirt of graphite powder havent had any problems since.
Havent had any experience with TJM so cant comment on these.
Cheers!

Poitr,

I'd imagine by an ARB tank you mean the Long Ranger tank. This is not of ARB manufacture and though they advertise and sell it, woe and betide if you have any issues with it. The first thing you'll here is that it's "not our product...we'll have to talk to the manufacturers in QLD" or "You'll have to pay for the labour to pull it out and we'll send it to QLD. blah blah"

I will use ARB products that they manufacturer like bull bars and side steps etc but from personal experience over many years now, their customer service can leave you cold (and in the cold!). For a tank have a look at someone like Long Range Automotive (Lilydale, Melb) or Brown Davis Automotive (Bayswater Vic). These two manufacturers produce good products and their customer service is second to none. Unless they've changed in the last two years, the long rangers are a bit short of external reinforcing on some of the critical edges on their larger model tanks. Be aware of this. The photo is of a Long Ranger (ARB) tank patched and reinforced for me by Brown Davis (couldn't afford the two weeks down time while ARB "spoke" with the manufacturers).

Snorkels are much of a muchness. Again the key is that they're one piece and it's all in the installation. If that's not spot on, you'll be getting dust and water where you don't want it. If it's two or three piece (like the Toyota 79 series), you've got to make sure the joints are sealed well. ARB sell safari from memory. I've had two vehicles fitted with them and they're good. TJM's are equivalent.

Hope this helps

Cheers Mick

Sorry, had the ARB canopy on the Navara. Second the locks issue. If you're thinking of putting drawers in the back of the ute and using an Engle fridge, get the high top canopy. Secondly, lift up windows can be a lot better than sliders if you need access to the stuff in the rear. I had sliders and it was a pain to try and get to stuff up the front of the tray. The side lift windows make it so much easier and lock/unlock from the outside.

Canopy was good. I'd have got the Carry Boy if I could have afforded it.

Cheers Mick

Hi,

Can't comment on the Hilux accessories or TJM but I did use ARB to kit out our Triton with long range tank, canopy, snorkel and bar work.

Canopy is good, very dust free considering where we have been, definitely recommend the lift up windows. Just beware on the rubber around the windows as this may rub when sliding items in and out. ARB fixed ours without a question. Rear window in the canopy bleep tered - replaced without question.

I'm on my 3rd tank - first one leaked and ARB replaced it and provided a vehicle whilst it was being done. Second tank also leaked, rang ARB - they immediately ordered a new tank to be fitted the next day, no questions asked. After 75000 klms haven't had a problem since.

It almost sounds like a tale of woe, but it's not. I was back there last week as they were refitting the under bonnets shower that the dealer snapped during a service. Dealer didn't have a clue, but ARB said bring it down. Fixed at no cost to me.

Overall, I'm happy with the service from ARB and would be happy to recommend them. No problems at all with the barwork, suspension snorkel, dual battery system etc.

Need to add - this was ARB Moorebank, NSW.

Thanks Michael. Sounds like the ARB service is pretty good from your experience. Would be good to know which brand of LR tanks they use.

I had an '03 'lux.
Save your money on the snorkel and long range tank - go with 4wd systems - you'll probably get a front diff lock as well for the money the big boys are asking.
I kitted mine with their stuff and it was fine. I believe their tanks are a cut above the flash brands. The snorkels (airtec) are also fine.
Canopy's - you get what you pay for. I have flexiglass (3XM) because they're cheaper but it shows.

I've had an Opposite Lock 160ltr tank in my D40 now for a shade over 2 years and all has been good. I note that they also make tanks for the 'lux - Opposite Lock Long Range Fuel Tanks
