I was taught to disconnect the wiring plug from the tow vehicle by grabbing the plug and pulling back on that, sometimes a little wiggle up/down or from side to side and it will come out. A lot of people just grab a handful of wire and pull and pull until it comes out.

The reason I bring this up is, This morning I get up at 5.30 am to get the horse float out of the shed to loan to a neighbour so she can go get her kids a pony.
I reverse the cruiser up, hitch it, connect the wiring and drive out.
I can smell something burning. within a second or two there is a small flickering light near my knee at the fuse box. I turn the engine off and jump out and there is a small plastic fire. I blow it out on further inspection one fuse it completely melted, the rest are blackened. It is the dash fan & over head fuel tank gauge fuse that is knacked. It also is the fuse for the electric Brake controller.
I remove the plug from the back of the cruiser and pull it apart. there are two wires that are not in their correct positions and are shorting on each other.
They have been pulled out of their terminals. Red & Blue wires.
This caused the short. You could see were the wires had been stripped from pulling them through the clamp inside the plug.

I'm thinking how lucky I was to of been able to stop and get out and have a look.
Now we haven't used the float ourselves for a long time, but have loaned it to a few different people over the past 12 months. I always been very care not to pull the pug out by it's wires, this includes the Camper and my work trailer. How many people do pull the plug out by the wires?
I do like the 'T' handle that the Anderson plug has, makes life easy. Maybe all wiring plugs/connectors should have them.
Looks like I'm up for another fuse holder, I guess it could of been worse.
Anyway, have a good one.

The attitude of most people seems to be "I pull it out by the cable, nothing has broken so far, it MUST be ok to do it that way" ?????

The purpose of fusing circuits is to PREVENT a fire - you need to find out why !

Maybe when when the Trailer Brakes were added to this fuse, the installer thought "There's a 15 amp fuse there now . . . so it won't blow with the extra load, I'll put in a 25 amp fuse".

Hi Mike,
I checked this morning and it's a 10 amp fuse that is suppose to be in that slot, God only knows what was in it before. So I've slotted a 10 amp into it, Nice mess, and a mongrel job to clean out the old fuses pins. But it looks like I will be able to clean up the holder pretty well. I'll still get a replacement one.

I'd be seriously investigating why the fuses didn't just blow.
Must be some serious wiring problem somewhere.

Hi Lex,
Yeah, I'll be checking everything with the multi meter and see if there is a short somewhere else. Luckily the fuse box isn't that much of a drama to get to.

My father just used to just drive off without unplugging it. Then I'd have the task of re-wiring it :-)
Seriously, the burn-up you describe sounds like the fuses installed were more nails than fuses, as they should have cleanly ruptured, no smoke, no fire.

Hi Gerry,
Yeah, I've got no idea what fuse was in there, probably a three inch nail at that, I've slotted the correct one in there, a 10 amp.

Hi Jon,

Having done many a good deed in my life, such as your lending the horse float and thinking about what happened, it reminds me of a saying my now departed nephew used to have.

"No good deed ever goes unpunished"

Won't stop us from helping someone out again but it makes you wonder.

Cheers, Bruce.

Hi Bruce,
Nah, won't stop us loaning it out again, we'll just have to be polite/diplomatic in the way we mention to people how to connect it up and unplug it, you know, so it doesn't sound like we a treating them like idiots.
I guess some people are never shown how to or some just don't care.

Maybe the cord got caught somewhere on the trailer and pulled when it was turned? I only know this because i rewired my boat trailer for one car leaving a nice little loop in the cable only to find out that when i plugged it into my other car which had the socket on the other side that the cable was now too short and pulled out when turning. They may not have pulled it out by the chord but something simular to what i discribed above could easily have happened. Something to think about. Cheers marn

Hi Marny,
Yeah good point, I'll check that out when she brings it back tomorrow.
I know for the Cruiser there is heaps of length, Maybe there is too for their vehicle and they've tied it up thinking it was going to drag on the ground or something.
I check it out.

Thanks Guys you've given me a few ideas to work on.
I'm thinking that maybe trailer/camper, caravan/boat trailer or what ever should have a curly cord, like a telephone cord, that is flexible and give enough length to allow for different vehicles set ups.

Hi Colin,
Yeah, it does.
A little preventive maintenance goes a long wayl. The fine dust that collects in the plug should be cleaned out regularly, as well as the Anderson plugs.

Would it be a big deal to make up a pull handle and clamp it to the neck of the plug.
A simple bent coat hanger or the like would do the job with a hose clamp to hold it securely to the neck of the plug.

A bit basic perhaps, but I'm sure you blokes could refine the idea to a realistic positive.
