Cost of this unit is around the $350 Mark - The list of 4wd Tracks is not bad and covers a lot of the outback treks including the Simpson desert.

When you go to this site you can open a link to the PDF showing all tracks covered

Thought I would give it a go (From Dick Smith)..Anyone have any comments on this product?

Hi. Not familiar exactly with what they are offering but I do run Oziexplorer off a Navman MY55T. Have all the Hema maps and more loaded to a micro SD card and for under $200 it was a viable option. Not prepared to pay $1,000 for the Hema Navigator particularly when I already had the software and maps operating on the laptop. Hopefully the package you are looking at offers you some flexibility to load more maps and has sufficient utility to perform the functions you require. Would be interested to see how it performs c/w Oziexplorer. Cheers

So you would have to purchase Oziexplorer @ 200 and the Hema Maps as well?

It looks like it is the Hema 4WD Maps 2011 which is sold here and it includes the Oziexplorer soft ware. If it is not then all you need to buy is a GPS from E.Bay which runs Windows CE 6 and buy the Hema 4WD maps here and away you go. Just make sure the GPS you buy has good screen res.

Finally set a trip from Birdsville to Alice springs for a preview - Its just like a street navigator - all you have is a line on the map to follow with no features.

But hey at least you know you are on the track :-)

So very basic, but if I can work out how to unlock it to put other Maps on - well it may be OK :-)

The site say's optional hema map download. Does this mean that nothing in the way of 4x4 maps is supplied with the unit and is the download free?

Also is the 4x4 mapping a touch screen in raster map format? I know very little about this type of gps as I only use a mapping gps which shows topo's in vector format. This format is much clearer and comes down to 35 feet without distortion
Would'nt mind something similar in raster format as to follow a track in vector you continually change pages.The touch screen and raster mapping in the Hema seems ok but I wouldn't use the street stuff. I realalise that raster mapping gets a bit blurry when zoomed in lower than about 500 mtrs.
Also I'm not interested in carrying the computer bit. Haven't even mastered cut copy and paste yet so computers are definately not my forta.

Would be interested to see how your Navman goes

This Model has them already loaded (Thats what it says on the box and has a function on the unit to switch them Off/On) - have no idea what they look like as yet - still trying to find my way through it?

Will post later when I do one of the roads up near Cooktown - The Creb Track is one of them, aslo Battle Camp Rd

Ah Two of my favourite roads. Will be back there in June to wet a line, probably near the mouth of the Jeani before returning to Cooktown and taking the tour to the top and back

Hi - not true - depends on what scale and/or resolution the raster image (map/airpohoto) was made at. Digital photos are in "raster" format. If you take a photo of an object, load it on your PC and then zoom in it will get progressively worse. If you need better detail then the solution is to get closer or use a zoom lens to capture the image.

Solution with maps is get a larger scale map or higher resolution airphoto (if available). You can get airphotos for some areas of Australia that are much less than 1m per pixel which allows you to see individual branches on trees which is a much lower zoom level than "500 mtrs".

Also be careful when interpreting the accuracy of vector images - they may appear "without distortion" when zoomed right in but the actual accuracy may or may not be way out as the data used to create the points, lines and polygons may have been captured at a less detailed scale.
