I read with amazement the misinformation provided on this subject.
The facts are :-
It is not illegal to drive with a gas fridge running in a caravan so long as it is correctly installed.
All gas appliances must be turned off when refuelling the towing vehicle.
This information was supplied by the Gas Inspectors Office and is current from July 2011.
I have run my fridge on gas for over 25 years because 12v is hopeless . Gas always turned off when refuelling.
It is the misinformation and scare tactics used by so called "experts" who only guess at answers or repeat what some "know nothing " has told them that causes confusion .
Get correct answers from the right source before opening your mouth.

Perhaps you could convince the guy on the Eighty mile beach road who lost the van and nearly the car because of a gas leak.

He hadnt turned the bottles off and lost the lot.

Also the guy at Banka Banka who sat a portable gas fridge on the ground near his trailer and then opened a Jerry can of petrol.
Lost trailer and Car and both him and wife were burnt enough to end up in hospital.

All towing guides recommend turning gas bottles OFF before travelling.
Just because YOU have got away with it for so long neither makes it right or sensible.

The law is not always correct either as to what SHOULD happen.

Common sense, that rarely used commodity comes to mind here.

I was always of the opinion that a fridge had to be level to run on gas.
Maybe this isn't the case. Maybe it's just more efficient.

If my fridge has an auto shut off when the flame goes out I'd be happy to give it a try.

I guess if there is a gas leak in the pipes the van could blow up anytime, weather it's moving or standing still.

Geoff

Not if the gas bottles are turned off, that is the whole point. Learn to run your fridge at a slightly cooler temp for 8, 12 or 24hours before travelling, much safer.
Cheers
Joel.

Hi Geoff,
You will find that gas fridges have an auto shut off for flame out. It is the button that you hold in or pull out temporarily when lighting. You sound like a sensible person and with common sense you should have happy caravanning.

Hi
It seems some are incapable of understanding that the fridge itself is not the whole problem
The gas being turned is the big risk ,pipes can rupture in an accident
OK if you have a gas fuse fitted ,BUT how many of those saying no problem have one
Another point is that the no flame cutout is not fault proof
Only needs a little bit of rubbish to stop it from sealing [very small flame can exist ]
Been there seen that!!
For your's & other's safety turn off AT THE GAS BOTTLE when travelling

IF the FRIDGE does not perform on 12v , don't blame the fridge, BLAME the poor set up you have

POOR VENTILATION
UNDERSIZED CABLING

LPG installations in caravans, recreational vehicles and boats must comply with AS / NZS 5601 2008. Cylinder compartments must be sealed from the interior of vehicles and boats and vented to the outside. Cylinder valves must be closed when a caravan is in transit. Never use any gas appliance, including a refrigerator, in a moving vehicle. Turn off every LPG appliance in caravans and boats before petrol refuelling.

Pretty straight forward to me ............................turn it off, why would anybody risk been killed or burnt is beyond me

We have a three way fridge in our van but we have never used it on the gas, the last thing we would do is have the fridge running on gas while in transit. We watched in horror the other day when a car got hit from behind and burst into flames because of a gas leak after the hit, I have never seen anything blow like that car did, one very lucky lady got out of it but we still don't know how, if she had her 4 kids in the car they would have not made it. No gas for me.....

Hi Barry,
I have been got at by experts so it is amusing to hear the amateurs make fools of themselves.
My source was the Qld GOV CSG &LNG Gas HOTLINE 132523 . I asked for a ruling on " operating a fridge on gas whilst driving" and was put through to the office where the regulations are drafted. I was advised that the latest rulings will be released on 1 July 2011 and my information was sourced from there. Another phone number which I have since found but not yet used is 07-32371626 listed as the Gas Inspectorate .
There is also a website www.dme.qld.gov.au and go to the section "Caravans and Gas Safety" a sub heading " Safety Check List" and go to the last para which reads "Check that all appliances are turned off when the towing vehicle is being refuelled".
When I read some of the examples quoted in replies it reminds me of who also said " You will never educate an idiot"
We are taking off for a month at the end of the week so it will be interesting to go through the emails when we return.

have a good one

John

For my style of travel it is the best. Just set the thermostat when leaving home & 2 or 3 months later when I arrive home I just turn it off.
Works just like a fridge.

Should have added that I had a near new caravan once with a 3 way fridge in it. It was useless. Had it to the service agents & put heavy wiring in to try & run it on 12 volt when travelling & it still was useless.
Had the sun hitting the wall of the van the fridge was on & the butter melted in it. They said it was too hot in the sun for it. My trailblazer was in the locked up wagon at the same time with the sun directly on it with just a hint of ice on the outside of my beers.
We used to just use the fridge as a storage space in the end.
The Jayco was only 12 months old when I bought it too.

To Fatso

Did they also put the same size wire through the car.
NO good ahveing big wiring in the van and not in the car.

We had 8G from the Aux battery to the fridge and 6G from Aux battery to the van batteries for charging.

We ran ours for over a year on an extended trip and never had that trouble except on days of 45 deg in SA in the summer.

Even the aircon and the Waeco wouldn keep up that day.

We run our fridge from the Anderson Plug while travelling, never had a problem.

When your 12 volt system is installed properly re- linked to the vehicles aux battery and solar.

Plus the fact the fridge automaticly cuts over when the 240volt system is switched off.

I for one would hate to make an insurance claim after an accident where the van ect was destroyed by a gas explosion or fire because I failed my Duty Of Care while the van was in transit with a lighted flame in an enclosed van.

This is an interesting topic. I used to drive a lunch truck in Sydney and there were many trucks in the fleet that I worked for and also in other companies. And all of the pie ovens were/are run off gas.
Just putting it out there.

Personally we don't travel with the fridge in our camper on gas, nor will I allow a gas cylindar to be carriered in our vehicle.

By the time he gets home his email box will be overflowing

The only thing I think he should read and understand is his last sentence about Confucius.
Self application would have prevented the waste of a thread like this.

As someone has said on here you can argue with an idiot but he will eventually drag you down to his level of stupidity.

Not quite what was quoted but will do in this instance.

By the way this is the correct spelling of CONFUCIUS

I'm happy with the safety of using a correctly installed fridge whilst driving.

However my concern is I don't know if the installation is correct, and secondly would I always remember to turn the thing off at the servo.

Too risky for me now, I'll stick with the 12v.
