Hi all, I have a 2002 Prado with manual transmission, and would much rather have the centre diff unlocked when in low ratio. This would be far more useful to me for reversing a caravan. As there are electric controls involved, does anyone know how to (electrically?) disconnect the locking mechanism? I don't care if the diff remains unlocked permanently.

Hi Petronus,

Had the same issue with my 100 Series 'Cruiser which had been experiencing heavy steering and transmission wind-up when reversing my Jayco Eagle into our driveway. Selecting low range automatically resulted in locked centre diff - rather inconvenient when trying to manoeuvre in a narrow suburban street which also happens to be a bus route.

Discussed this with my mechanic of 20+ years and he sorted it the next time I had the vehicle serviced, so that the centre diff now only engages when the button on dash is engaged, as per normal high range engagement.

Result? Apart the driveway that's reasonably steep and angled to the road, there are no further issues when reversing my Jayco in low range, but centre diff locking available on demand in both ratios.

PS don't ask me what he did to fix it, but I'd guess it relates to an electircal connection at or near the transfer case or transfer case selector. I'm pretty sure I didn't pay anything for his work.

Regards,

Charlie

At Landcruisers Online, it's known as the "Pin 7 modification" for the 100 series - did mine as per the PDF download supplied by a member there - a wonderful improvement to the usability of the car for sure.

Can certainly be done to a 100 series - have done so to mine. Still have 4WD low but only by pushing CDL button. May be a similar fix for Prado - ask on LCOOL - that's where I got the instructions for mine.
