Greetings all,

Just on a long shot has anyone ever paddled into Lake Goyder from Coongie Lake, i realise access into Coongie lakes has been closed due to flooding , but hoping for a mid 2012 trip. Base camping at Coongie lakes and then navigating the creeks to Lake Toontoowaranie and onto Lake Goyder.

regards jim

done some kayaking around there a few years ago when it was open so I would assume that you would encounter more water (?) in 2012 if open.
The kayaking is great so would be a great experience. We went from Coongie to the Western Lake without much issue (forgot the spelling). A bit of navigating between reeds and a bit of a carry but not too hard.

The way that you want to go from Coongie to the north of the lake is much harder. A lot of dead trees up that end which turns into very dense scrub in the water (doesn't show up well on Google Earth but it is there!). We couldn't see a way through it. We did think about carrying the kayaks across the dunes but we weren't there for that type of adventure so we didn't have the time put aside for that.
If you put aside the time and expect the worst if you can't get through (carry for a while) then it would be a fantastic thing to do. Best case is the extra water has 'pushed' a way through the scrub and it's open to kayak the whole way through.

The lake is only closed because of the track. The other option is to kayak from Innamincka to Coongie Lake as a plan B if the track is still closed in 2012. You'd be guaranteed to have the lake to yourself!

Thanks Gossy for the info,

It will be interesting to see if all the water in the lakes system can flush Browne and Ellar creeks. Will be keeping a close eye on this over the next few months.

Cheers Jim
