We are travelling with a dog and want to visit Canarvon Gorge - has anyone got suggestions for campsites close to the Gorge outside the National Park

Nothing close The Crow. There is a grassy (and sometimes boggy by the deep bog ruts in it) where the road in crosses Carnarvon Creek. While we were there a trio of caravan stopped there and someone stayed back with the dog while the others drove on to the gorge during the day. One look at those wheel tracks and i would never take our rig there.

I agree with Motherhen.
Can't recall anywhere appropriate to stop & camp either way from Roma to Rolleston. From memory (was there back in 1998) once off the main road, the majority of the remaining 50 or so kms of unsealed road is farmland before you approach the National Park.

There's Wallaroo free camp which is on the top of the range, south of the Wyesby turn-off to CGNP. Twenty-four odd clicks. I have the coordinates somewhere.

It has all the amenities of a free camp - nothing but plenty of dirt and gravel sites, limited shade (trees are not very high). You can hide a van down the back.

When we stayed there in August, the caretaker of Wallaroo (the ex-owner) and his wife came along and ear-bashed us for a while and sold me a book. Interesting bloke, but bit of an "I" specialist.

Cheers,
"A".

We were there in October and stopped at Wallaroo for lunch, it was hot and dusty and had some strange signage so we didn't feel comfortable staying there by ourselves. We decided to try our luck out towards the National Park, on the way out to the Gorge there is a memorial site to an aeroplane that crashed nearby which would be a possibility but you can't get far off the road. It is signposted no camping in the river bed nearby so we were unsure if that applied to this site as well. To be safe we continued to Rolleston and stayed in the van park, about 100km away.

The lady running the Rolleston park offered to care for my dog for the day.
