This is a
campground in the
Kosciuszko National Park. There are a number of small, informal campsites with no facilities along the banks of the Swampy Plains River. The adjacent large flat, now being rehabilitated, was a large, long term workers'
camp during the construction of the
Snowy Mountains Scheme.
The Flat is accessible from the Alpine Way via the
Geehi Camp over a rocky crossing of the river at the southern end of the Flat. There are a number of substantial historic fishing huts in the area, built from rocks obtained from the river and surrounds.
The best sites are near
Keeble's Hut at the northern end of the Flat. Here there is a large, deep swimming hole and a rope swing for the kids (big and little) and a long drop
toilet. This section can get busy in holiday periods.
The Flat is a good base from which to explore the local area. The
Geehi Walls 4WD trail leads north to Major Clew's hut and trail which rejoins the Alpine way and allows a loop drive back to
camp.
Camping is free but sites must be booked online at a $6 cost. Park use fees are payable at the Park entrance station on the Alpine Way as you approach Thredbo from
Jindabyne and also at NSW NPWS offices at
Khancoban. $17 in summer, $29 in winter.The
Khancoban office is the administrative headquarters for the
campground.
Long drop
toilet. One picnic table. Bring firewood. Limitless clean water from the river (boil before drinking, you can guess what swimmers do in it). Take your rubbish with you.
