Hi,
Planning a trip to the
Birdsville races this year and one area that I cant get a handle on time taken to travel is between Cameron's Corner and the Strezlecki track. 3 vehicles towing campers. I have searched
treks and there is no real details on this part. I have the distance, not sure on a reasonable time under normal conditions.
Any assistance would be good from someone who has done it.
Any sites you suggest to visit on this section would be good info.

Hi Dave,
The distance is about 115km and allowing a speed of 80km/h the time is about 1 1/4 hours.
Say 1.5 hours max and you should be around the mark.
The track is usually in good condition unless there has been recent rain in the area.

Maybe,
Will get to Whitecliffs on 30/8 and is a bit of a mystery at this stage from there (dig tree the shearing shed etc) but will arrive at
Windorah on 3/9 for Yabbie races, arrive
Birdsville on 4/9. After races going down the Bridsville track and into
Flinders Ranges, then on towards
Mildura on the way
home.
Will be driving a graphite 79 D/Cab with canopy and towing an All Terrain camper.

I have done it a couple of times. I would allow a couple of hours in case you want to stop and have a look at anything. One way to get a good look at red sand and dunes without the effort of a Simpson crossing. If turning north to
Innamincka, be aware that the Old Strezlecki turn is about 10 k short of the much better quality road past Moonie.
Road over clay capped dunes is usually pretty good. One safety tip - stay left on the crests. There are lots of crests and lots of tales of those who did not stay left.

Yeah, some of it is quite a roller coaster.
The Old Strez tk is now clearly posted as such.

Last time we went through there we were warned to watch out for
places on the crests of the dunes where the clay topping had broken through and the hole filled with bulldust. Hard to see - and the holes were big enough to do damage. We also encountered a lone camel that did the camel trick of wanting to run along the road in front of us.

Did the trip from
Innamincka to Cameron Cnr last July. Found the Old track in much better condition than the new. The other thing to watch going over the crests is cattle. They seem to have a habit of congregating at the bottom of the crest on the departure side. Had a couple of near misses.
