The cost of toys

Willem

Having spare moment with time on my hands I decided to add up what the old truck and all the repairs, add-ons, improvements and toys cost. Click on my Rig Pic to see comprehensive updated list of STUFF...:-)

Bought in 1998(I think I am owner number 5) with 350,000 on the clock. Have done 106,000km since then, of which around 20,000km was towing a 27ft van.

Total cost excluding running costs such as fuel, oil, tyres, repairs, rego.....$18,550

Now where do all you other travellers come in at?

Don't reckon they clocked up as many miles as you mate, and the DAF factory bought it off them to put in their main factory showroom.

Now, how cool would it be for the Nissan ( Datsun ) dudes in the land of the rising sun to have your rig as a drawcard. I can just imagine it.... bus loads of Japenese schoolchildren going out on an excursion, to learn about the ways of the wayward...... oops......sorry.
They walk single file into a LARGE room with glass and mirrors and stuff, and there up on a rotating dias......... ROSIE!!!

Video footage of Willie, doing willie things........ children wishing they could leave their cold country, and come out here to explore....... ahhhh....... the romance.........

Mate, out of ALL the rig pics here......YOURS is the ONLY one that sticks out and I remember. There is something so cool about your rig, sort of like Mel Gibson and the 2 door black Ford coupe. Definately stuff of legends.......

You can get a man into a lot of trouble enticing him into revealing what should be secret men's businss. Actuall costs can often be doubled because for every dollar spent on the wagon, the BOSS will want access to an equal amount for her pleasures. I usually talk in terms of "look how much I saved on this little bargain, dear" and the she gets to spend the bit I saved. It seems to work OK so far, but if she reads this revelation I'll have imprints of the Goodyear MTR's across my head.
Might be a good idea for David to pull this post altogether I think.

How you been keeping anyhow ? I think I might have missed you by a few days up at Ruths a couple of months back, we were in a bit of a hurry on that trip.
SWMBO and I are just finalising our trip to the Coburg Pen & western gulf country in Aug/Sept. We will probably head up through Hungerford & the channel country - can't wait to get out bush again.

Up to a total ownership of 80 plus vehicles over the years (including motorbikes) at this stage. Should own (and be collecting rent) from a shopping mall by now.

Oh well, at least I've had fun. Becoming too much of grown-up now and it sucks when I look at it. Don't think about it. HAVE FUN! Remember, it's better to regret something you've done, than something you haven't. You can't hit the rewind button at the end.

First 4x I bought was a G60 and went a lot of places in it. When I sold it I had clocked up 280,000 K's in 6-1/2 years, absolute terrific old beast and some times I wish I still had it. The only major expense was fuel over the years as they do chew a bit. The current Maverick 4.2 diesel has had about 4 grand spent on it and swmbo hasn't screeched once until I mentioned getting a Safari snorkel (the straw & camel theory). Thanks to EO some posts recommend it as a must and these posts I show her for aid in getting one. A few more "must have a snorkel" posts would help....please......

I have met Rosie and I know the toys you have bought have been recent like the GPS as you have always known where you were.

Willem, I reckon those who decide to tow a trailer decide to take more gear with them but am sure the gear we take is just as expansive. Heather likes to cook sometimes and gets more than just a couple of dishes dirty. Have not counted mate but it weighs a lot, the short list is with the rig pic. The long list I can email.

A good friend of mine bought a 2nd hand ex-Govt troopy at auction in Alice a few years ago, and rigged it out with shelving, roof top tent and water tanks. It had a winch, spots and high lift jack points already. Apparently he's also put a mapping gps into it since I last saw it. Still runs the original split rims. It was a cheap vehicle to buy, and still travels where most of us wouldn't..

I just got an email from him and his wife from Dalanzadgad in the Gobi desert. Travelling across Russia this time. They've already travelled through Africa and the Middle East.

They've wandered all over in that troopy with very few problems, and it looks like they're just going to keep going.

I have read some of their travel journal..............Green with envy I am.....that is something I would have liked to have done but the opportunity never availed itself...now it may be too late. I did however relate to their Southern Africa adventures as I have been to many of the places that they visited. Their travels definitly make our inland travel here look like chickenfeed :-)

He's one of the most practical individuals you'd ever come across though he's not a mechanic. Comes from a farming family. I'm sure that he would never have considered taking on this sort of travel in a vehicle that had computer controlled everything (or anything!). I travelled with him in the US and England, and it was an eye opener on how to make do.

I think it's a pity that the latest Oz designed "4wd" isn't the tough simple practical type of vehicle that bush travel demands. IMHO we should be leading the world in 4wd design. Strange that Japan, England, US are doing it. Maybe that's why it's all getting a bit pear shaped?

Rosie is a proper 4wd. No offence - but I think we need an equivalent for this century that doesn't cost $60K. It would probably be a real challenge to do it without ANY computers and still comply with all the rules - but we're the "smart country" or somesuch - aren't we?

As for travelling - from reading through your exploits Willem, it seems that you've given it a damn good shake - and still doing it. Most people wouldn't come close. It's never too late, just too expensive ;-)

Yes, it is a pity that we in Australia can't come up with a decent bush vehicle. The blokes at OKA tried but I think that they over-engineered it. I am ready for an upgrade to another bush vehicle and have toyed with the idea of dropping a diesel donk in to the old G60 but it seems like too much work at my age plus the G60 is a bit worn. So I am weighing up the pros and cons of the last of the uncomputerised Troopies or a GQ or GU Nissan. There are so many issues with the latest 4x4's that I do not want to venture down that road. In essence I must still be able to repair the truck myself out beyond Sandy Blight Junction.

The troopy seems to be the only one left - and you need an older model even then. They're the latest craze amongst my old crowd in Alice.

We lived in Alice for 11.5 years as well - first in Memorial drive and then out at the golf course. Wishing I could see some red dirt again right now. Plan to drag the boat up to the top end for a month or two at the end of July, so not long now...

Time to pack up the tent again.

On existing truck, GQ Patrol including all toys but not price of car, around 15k. For new GU, already spent 4k on toys to be fitted to Nissan, then lots more to come...

Lucky I type this all at work, best place to do it so the Missus doesn't see the figures, that's alot of renovations...
