Toyota passenger side magnifying mirror alternative ?

Submitted: Sunday, Apr 02, 2006 at 17:35

Member - Willie , Epping .Syd.

Is it possible to get a replacement external passengers side mirror for my TD landcruiser that is just a normal view like on the passwenger side ?

I can never judge when to change lanes with this rotten damn thing on it now - they look miles away and in fact they are only a few feet behind me .

I do not need to know if the modification is legal or OK for insurance purposes . As far as I am concerned this thing is a danger to me and NO , I cannot get used to it .

Willie Thanks ,

I had a mirror (just glass) broken on a car and just had a glass place cut a piece of mirror to fit and glued it over the old mirror. Cheapest option and kept Original Mirror housing.

Willie, as Sedg says, go to a glass place, it's certainly the best option.
Cost is minimal too.

Mirror problems eh ....... I have a wide angle on the left and right i like it because i can see everything on the left when i do need to change lanes . I have been trying to find a normal mirror that will sit along side without vibrating to much , I have a normal on the right but it shakes a lot where the 2 others I got from Autopro has good strong brackets, Sooo Willie what a leaving it and adding a normal with it or is there no room ,My advantage is i use the mirror frames from the utes and can put 2 mirrors on each '

Willie, what about adding a small wide angled mirror (supercheap)in the bottom corner of a standard mirrow ? They allow you to see if a vehicle is in your blind spot.

Hi Howard ,

My land is between the junction of the Isabella Rivers and the Abercrombie . The Isabella R was as dry as a bone . The Abercombie is not flowing , but there are still shallow pools in which the big carp are very nervous . We herded them up one end of a big pool by wading it and when they were cornered at the end in shallow water , they made a bolt for it . We had 10 lb fish tearing between our legs . Quite a hoot .

There certainly would not be any trout of any size left in either river .

Most of the trout stocked by the locals , would have died because of lack of oxygen or shags .

They had a 7 ml of rain after we left , but this would really be a drop in the bucket

Cheers ,

Willie

Hi there Willie, I'm with you there, those mirrors are a pain in the arse, I have one on my commodore passengers side and they are a barsted to judge anything, and before anybody comments I use to drive semi's for a living and I can judge very well, funny enough the prime mover I drove had full size normal mirror on passengers side with a convex mirror at the bottom for any blind spots, take away the normal mirrors on any truck and see how many things the truckies would reverse into. These convex mirrors are more of a danger then the normal mirrors. My hilux is an old model so only have the normal type on the passengers side and have no problems seeing or changing lanes with the canopy on and a full load where as I cant use the rear vision mirror in the cab.Go for it Willie, hope you can get one from where one of the people have said above. I can't get used to them and reckon they are safety hazards.

On the other hand I've not had much problem with a similar wide angle mirror on the passenger side of the wife's Falcon. Do the LC ones 'compress' more?

I would prefer to have normal glass in both mirrors with a wide angle insert if needed.

Please keep us informed about how you get on.

You have three choices

a. Curved Mirror only - some people have trouble judging the distance to the vehicle in the left lane.

b. Flat mirror - there's a big bang when people change lanes because they didn't see the vehicle in the next lane because of its blind spot of flat mirrors (that's why curved mirrors are used today)

c. Flat mirror with curved mirror add-on. You can judge distance and not have a blind spot.

Sand Man (SA) replied:

Willie,

You have opened a can on worms here.

Bloody ADR regulations are the culprits.

I also agree that the inability to judge distances, (like you can with the right hand mirror), represents a greater safety hazard, than a more "restricted" view.

If people set the left mirror up to view the blind spot, rather than along the side of the vehicle, there is much less chance of not seeing the car "next to you".

Like others, I have looked at a way of ridding myself of the "useless" mirror I have on the left side at present. Some interesting solutions have been put forward to consider.

Hi Sand Man ,

Yes , like you I line up the mirror so that is looking well out from the side of the car . It's not rocket science is it .

I spoke to a guy in a 4WD shop today and he said you go to Obrien Glass . They cut a piece of paper to the size of the mirror , then cut a perfect shape . You then stick this on with double sided tape ( although Nudie says there is a silicon glue you can use )

Cheers ,

Willie .
