Puter network setups, your advice needed.

So I'm stuck in the days of Windows XP and desktops. I thought I'd be safe here, but modern technology won't allow me to sit still.
I use a dial up connection, quite adequate for my use. Cheap, and I get a web space .
My wife has a desktop 2 rooms away without net access.
So she goes and signs up for one of these new fangled Telstra broadband access plans....but when I look it hasn't got web space. My home pages will disappear.
The broadband hardware is here and I have to do something (send it back ?)
Oh and she wants to network the two puters, so that she can have net access also !

What to do that's cost effective and effecient ?
(Sorry, can't get new model wife. Cost is prohibitive)

Use a cross over cable and have one PC set up as a gateway. I think that is the easiest and cheapest way. This is providing that the broadband equipment will allow you to set up that way. If the broadband has a usb port or a RJ45 socket you could plug a switch/hub into it and be networked that way. Either way it would be less than $50 to do.

I am sure there are other ways to do it and there will be people here to show me the errors of my ways.

Purchase a broadband wireless router and set up your connection on it.....that will take care of the internet access! now all you need is a wireless card for each of your workstations.....to add another workstation just get another wireless card!

Personally I recommend Exetel (Telstra make me quiver) - they give you a 70Mb home page and up to 15 email addresses and there service is excellent!You should be able to organise a package deal with the router from the ISP.

We have reduced our toll call account to a fraction of what we used to pay. Then you can get your phone rental reduced to $19.50 per month. The savings just go when you have Broadband setup correctly and use VOIP, you can save heaps.

Telstra/Optus and a few others are making so much money out of the Australian public, it is not funny. Go with the smaller companies and you will save more than you thnk was possible.

Wireless Router connected to ADSL and usually has multiple RJ45 (network) connection sockets. Connect the local PC to one of these sockets and the other with a wireless network card.

You can also get a wireless router with a built-in print server so you can also print from the remote PC. (Or install a separate print server to the router.

The answer to this bit is easy... Tell Telstra to shove it and visit www.whirlpool.com.au Look around at how much more you get for your $$ from just about every ISP when compared to Telstra & Optus...

You can choose a little 4 port hub to distribute some more access points to other rooms via cable or you can get a wireless router which does the same thing wirelessly. Some will say cables are far better and less finicky than wireless, it's your choice.

Your wife signed up without consulting you or the forum here.....not good.
If she's signed up then you're under contract aren't you and can't get out without penalty. If you can get out then do it, There's better deals around with webspace included. Have a look at www.whirlpool.net.au

Networking is no problem, if you have a laptop and desktop then I'd suggest a wireless link to the lappy. For two desktops I'd suggest a wired network.
