Evening all,
Has anyone had any experiece with the Hillbilly range of camp ovens etc.
Swmbo saw them at a show and has decieded that they look like they would be the sort of thing that we should throw some money at. Any comments on quality or cooking ability from anyone who has used this brand would be appreciated.

Hi Rob we have the complete set of Hillbilly cooking range, and absolutley brilliant. We have all size camp ovens, the frypan and hotplate that go on the stands and hang of the hooks, the gas burner that you can use with your campoven and then turn it up the other way and it cooks as a frypan as well as cooking your roast in the camp oven. Very light weight, so it dosnt weigh a ton when you are carting it around, and the vegie ring that goes in the top of the camp oven is the best thing. So many of our friends that we have gone camping with have brought Hillbilly things since using ours and tasting the roasts that come out of it, they cant believe the rnage they have. W eare more than happy with ours and believe you me, its been used time and time again. Well woth the money, and every time they bring something new out we but that too! Even there hot water donkey is bloody great value for money. You will not be sorry if you do buy some of their stuff, we cannot speak highly enough of it. Buying the carry bags to put their things in as well I think helps kepp it all in brilliant condition. Hope this helps with your decision!

Patrol with it all,

Not only do you have excellent taste in 4WDs I totally agree with you on the Hillbilly camping gear. It is excellent and I always search them out to see what new gear they come up with. All the gear works well rignt down to the tent peg puller. Fellow campers are always amazed at how well the camp ovens work without the handicap of all the weight of the cast iron variety.

Happy camping

Honestly, we would never have anything else now but Hillbilly cooking gear. And the tent peg puller, who ever invented that, deserves a medal. It is brilliant as well.

Yes, yes and yes again.

I also have a HillyBilly Bushking "package" I saw at an Off-Road and Camping Show a couple of years back.

Absolutely the "Duck's Guts" in Camp Ovens.

I still have a Bedourie oven (bit small) and a cast iron jobbie that requires it's own transport to take anywhere.

I bought the HillyBilly because:-
It was a good sized diameter wise, enabling a bread tin to fit inside.
It has the best designed handle I have seen.
It has the most practical lid which doubles as an excellent frypan.
It has the gas ring attachment which fits either on top or the bottom of the oven, depending whether you are boiling, roasting or baking.
It all fits inside a beaut canvas carry bag.
It is made of quality spun steel which makes it light but retaining quality.
Its made in Mexico (Victoria) - Oh well, has to be one negative doesn't there:-)

Did I say it's the Duck's Guts in Camp Ovens?

Throw your money at it. You won't be disappointed and a Show is generally where you will save a little of it. Just one word of advice. Buy the bigger unit. (Bushking)

Now, where's my commission:-)

Here's their Web site if you wish to browse.
(I have no commercial arrangement with the manufacturer...blah...blah...blah)

Mexican is a well known call for Victorwegians that appear to want to mass migrate over the northern border to better climates during the hibernation period.

Normally they invade bowling clubs with cut lunches and thermos flasks as they are too poor to buy a meal or a beer as they have to keep their money for fuel as they know they will be eventually caught by emmigration and sent back when they thaw out.

I also have a hillbilly camp oven the bushking and I purchased the gas burner and also have the bag so is easy to carry about. I have cooked many a meal in it and like using it

I only have one issue at this stage ........ I am having trouble cooking roasts in the oven with the gas burner ( I have only just got it), not sure why. I can cook roasts, pizza's, bread, deserts etc with heat beads no problem just not the gas burner.

I have sent two emails to Hillbilly after assistance and nil replys .......... I just want some advise if i'm doing something wrong with the gas burner is all.

Before you light the gas burner read the silver plate on the side :) .......

I guess I will just call them. I still think they are great and i'm sure I will get the gas burner thing sorted out soon.

HillBilly is a small family operation now mainly run by Mick & Belinda they travel to shows extensively and may find it diffucult at times to email.

They would have no hesitation in telling and helping you make a success of your use of HillBilly gear and are great people and cooks to boot.

Ring them on 0407540005

Hi Brian,

A mate of mine is a chef and he is absolutely wrapped with his Hillbilly despite some initial teething problems. After struggling to achieve the results he saw at the show he bought his at he went back to see Hillbilly at the Wandin show earlier this year.

He was advised that there was a batch of faulty valve/regulators and to send his back to be checked. Turned out it was faulty and they sent him a new one. Now when he caters for us on our trips we eat like kings and the spuds are always crunchy.

Only observation I would make is that it needs a wind guard.

Geocacher,

I did have a wind guard, I will contact them by phone i figure it maybe a valve as I did get burnt when fired up the first time as it flashed back and lit up at the air intake.

I still think they are great ovens just on a learning curve i guess :)
