Storage Draws for GU - Weight?

Submitted: Monday, Oct 02, 2006 at 11:22

Moggs

Hi All,

I am about to order a set of side by side draws for my Patrol from www.offroadsystems.com.au. They have gal draws and a waterproof ply top and draw front. The set weighs 75kgs. Not sure how this compares with other draws out there??? There is plenty of info on materials used, dimensions etc however not much on how much they weigh.

Those that have a set of draws - what sort of weight are they empty? Is 75kgs considered heavy?

Moggs, I had a set in my Hilux Ute (now sold) put in by Opposite Lock. Weighed 120kgs empty (3 drawers and fridge slide). Terrific set up, but heavy.

This is only 2 draws at 75kgs - so seems ok taking into account that it is one draw less - although I reckon the Hilux draws would be bigger.

$1,500 for the long draw set (draws each 920mm L, 500mm W,185mm H), includes double runners on each draw. They do a shorter draw (750mm L) that is $1,250 in gal or $1,500 in aluminium. The shorter draw set weighs 65kgs for gal and 45kgs for aluminium.

i'd look at the ali draws but in the longer length. You already have a bit of weight in the rear with the step.

I'd go this style, still have the flat surface, but much more user friendly.

I have a set of these drawers in my gu & i am very happy with them
Mine are 3 drawers high on the drivers side ( the bottom one is a deeper drawer with a double slide track as i have my tools in this one) with a 40l engel on a slide on the passenger side at floor level (easy to get in to standing on the ground)
I have a centre pole tent, bbq plate, tarps & chairs on the flat top of the drawer set
I also ordered the drawers with a 60l stainless water tank in the front of it & a cargo barrier to suit as well as a table top that sits on the top of the lower drawer when open (very simple & handy as for meal preperation)
Off road systems did the lot as a package & were great to deal with & i have had this setup for around 18 months & have no problems at all
As far as weight goes i am not sure but i would say they would be comparable to other drawer systems & not overly heavy

Regards Don

Thanks Don, have also heard good reports elsewhere re: their draws. Graham seems pretty good to deal with from the contact I have had with him so far. I liked their water tank setup - but will carry water in the camper to try and keep the weight down in the back of the Patrol.

This is the drawer system I have. Drop over for a look if you need to. Not too heavy and no where near the weight of some. They bolted straight in and have been great. Will move them on to the next car. He will install the T bolts for a fridge slide if you need it. Make sure you get the 2 runners fitted to the drawers. They sent them down by courier.

I had the cargo barrier installed before the drawers so mine are the ones that fit behind the Milford. Does he now have a longer set? Col did the half barrier to fit on top of the drwaers at the back. I don't think I'd want them any longer. It leaves a bit of space behind the back seat.

Peter, he does two lengths for the Patrol now.

The standard draws are 750mm long. They end at child restraint bolts and leave about a 10mm gap to a full length Milford barrier.

They also do a long draw set with 920mm draws - these apparantly need a half barrier installed.

Would be great to have a look at yours prior to ordering.

Those are the ones I was originally thinking of getting. Was just not sure if they would be too short. Does the top go past the child restraint bolt? - which is in line with the end of the side pockets under the rear windows.

I wanted the 750 draws as they are lighter by 10kgs - but not if there is a heap of wasted space you cannot get too from behind due to the barrier. Graham actually mentioned that many just cut a hole in the milford barrier mesh at the bottom to gain access to this area from behind the back seats - would probably be a good place to put the spares kit ie. hoses, belts, bearing kits, oil etc.

You still have access to the child restraint bolts and we use the spaece for all sorts of stuff that sits neatly behind the seats. Taking some mesh out of the barrier would work fine.

I am fascinated by all this discussion about how long and how heavy your draws are, from the size and weight I would assume that you are talking about Winter draws not the lightweight summer versions I am moving into at this time of year.

I wouldn't have thought that draws made out of aluminium would be very comfortable - more like a chastity belt.

Donk and PeterMcG however seem to be having a side conversation which doesn't seem to be about underwear at all but drawers - as in chest of drawers.

Black Widows are 65kg (so I'm told).
I got the full length side by side for the same reasons and the plastic crate with timber lid works fine as a step. SWMBO car access the fridge and she's only 5' tall!
I also sold the Milford Barrier and went for the half barrier with the drawers a little longer and there's still plenty of room behind the seat for bits and pieces.

Very happy overall, but the only thing I don't like is the inability to get at the stuff under the floor where the wheel arches are without unloading the stuff on top of the hatches. The Tanami drawers have a little 'door flap' to access this area which would be handy.

Cheers,

Mark

Dept of Interior in Syd draws are all hardwood ply and are much lighter.
Mine have done nearly 400 000 km in a work vehicle and still work OK. They are about to go into the new wagon shortly
I can lift them in and out of the vehicles myself so at most would be 40kg I reckon. That is both draws together just missing half the top lid, other side has a slide.
Worth a look
