Hello all,

I'm in the market for a new GPS for my car and was wondering if anyone knows the what brand i should be looking at.
I need the most easy to use unit (not being very technically minded)

Can anyone advise?

Brian,

That is a very open question like
what make of vehicle Toyota or Toyota.
what make of fridge Engel or Engel
what make of tyres Cooper or Cooper
and to answer your question Garmin or Magellan.

They are both very good quality of GPS just have to decide what model, just like the Toyota model, Troopie or Troopie

As a followup to Wayne's comments, you need to decide how you will use it.

Is it only for vehicle use, or do you want a portable unit you can carry around with you at times,

A gps can also have maps loaded to display where you are at a given point in time.

Have a look at www.gpsoz.com.au which distribute both Magellan and Garmin brands. The Garmin units can also be purchased though the Shop on this site.

The Magellan Explorist range or the Garmin Quest range are very popular, but need additional accessories to secure them in the vehicle.

Do you need one to guide you around city streets? Then maybe Navman.Rio
Tom Tom. Or a GPS like Magellen or Garmin. Something you can load maps on
for maybe out back travel

Only you know what facilities you require of a GPS. You will receive a much more useful response if you spend a little time learning about GPS (do you _really_ even need one?) and then selecting 2 or 3 products which look as if they will do the job and asking what people think of those products. Your question as posted is rather of the "how long is a piece of string" variety.

Try here for some good GPS info.

gpsinformation.net/

and here for the shopping:

I can really see your point , and fully agree with your thoughts, You did ask a sensible Question , you most certainly did not get a sensible answer, I had the same BS when I posted about the Dodge Nitro 4X4 , quite childish I thought , In fact I may not bother to re-Join next time it is due, I like to have a sensible Chat and discussion with a genuine 4X4 owner,
as My other post to you I use and recomend Garmin, I have a Quest and a Nuvi 660

Doug,

The original post was about the best brand of GPS.

I thought that I answered it. Garmin or Magellan, then I get called names because I did not read his mind and post what model we would recommend.

We do not know what he wants to use the GPS for and as you know there are a lot of applications, street navigation or out back travel or both.

Brian might be new to the site but if he wanted to be more specific about the GPS he should have put it in the post. As far as I am concerned the post was answered. What is the best brand of GPS.

Steady on

Brian you need to settle down a bit my son and go with the flow.

Your not going to get a very positive response with those remarks. It's one thing to be passionate about something, but insults will get you nowhere.

Regards

Another thing is I had some links on my web site that were not Australian, I have removed those links except one ,the one Mike Harding added to his post ,

I don't think this was appropriate either

Someone comes on the forum asks a question and doesn't like the answers, then gets abusive.
Then you think my response is inappropriate, I stand by my response because I don't suffer fools easily.

When you get outback ...say near Windy Corner your Navman screen will be BLANK If you had a Garmin it will have Gary Highway / Talawana Track intersection on the screen.

I'm pleased he had "1969" after his name ............................... a simple question I guess but a very very broad question, however, he was also very quick to abuse so if he has left no great lose really ................. as for the question "Garmin" why because I juts got one :) :).

Brian ........................... please note not the one with 1969 after the name :)

Hi Brian,
depends what do you want. Only City navigation, or Topo ( off road) as well. If you like both navigation systems ( CITY + TOPO) in one GPS unit I would suggest to have a look www.navnet.org.au

Good luck Patan
