Hi Scott & Gabby,
Looks like you are getting plenty of tips. Best time is around autum to early winter
The only boat trips I know of are on the west coast, from
Darwin to
Broome, very expensive, around $10-12,000 pp, for 3 weeks
Cheers

Scott and Gaby, you can Member Message Navigator 1 from NSW who has done that particular trip up to
Cape York and driven back. They aren't online at the moment so I am not sure if home and would see the message.
The boat trip can be up there or back, but they did the way you are talking about. Loved it. I haven't done it yet

Scott and Gaby,
Welcome to the
Forum.
If you look in the Members
Trips and Gatherings (here)
There is a Cape trip planned this year that you may be able to tag along with and get the info that you require from the other participants prior to leaving.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Kev and Darkie

Cape York is a great place. Leave yourself plenty of time. There is lots to see.
The immediate Cape area around
Bamaga has several
places to see such as
the tip, plane wrecks,
Somerset, etc.
The fee to cross the Barge at the
Jardine River just south of
Bamaga includes
camp fees for the the top of the cape.
The most scenic and interesting route south is along the telegraph road. (4WD with interesting
creek and river crossings and lots of waterfalls)
If time go out to the East coast (Iron range) and the west coast (
Weipa)
The time to go is mid winter (still quite warm but
water levels will have dropped) The roads up the cape have reputation for some of the worst corrugations in Australia but these are mainly on the bypass roads.
You need to have 2-4 weeks to do the place justice.
I don't know the details but you are capable of shipping your car from
Cairns to
Bamaga
www.seaswift.com.au
and then driving south. Most drive both ways and if done this way it is a good strategy to drive straight up to the cape using the bypass roads and then use your time to slowly work your way south.
Alcohol restrictions apply in some areas and
Coen acts as a border where no fresh food etc can be taken south. (Checkpoint on road)
There are lots of maps and guides available about the cape. Enjoy one of the best parts of Australia.
Alan

Canada would have been pretty flash too in 2001BC ;-))) and then again in 2027, that is a pretty long life Bonz, as
well as the ability to remember.

Doug, when the accident prone Mayor of Western Victoria, gives us a 4028 year time span between visits to Canada. Who am I to argue with him? He was there before the Brits were;-)))) Diplomacy at risk here.
There should be Aussie Columbia with a quite different flag there. Lucy, what have you done with it?

Doug, as the only sane one amongst this rabble I will answer only your question: Are you back from the Future, whats it like?
Answer: I didn't like the colours and there were only NISSAN PATROLS on the roads, all the Toyotas were broken down

Okay Guys, Canada will stay Canada and the only Aussie flag will be the Aussie flag at our bar. And sorry Poppy it WAS a dream Toyotas aren't broken down. However over here in Canada Nissans have an option attached to their rear bumpers. It is a hand warmer to keep your hands warm when you are pushing it in the winter.
Thanks for the great read.
PS hope I didn't make a mistake you guys are good.

I could tell you about the stickers on our Nissans that read
"TOYOTA RECOVERY VEHICLE" but hey, this thread will go on forever.
Welcome aboard the mad house
I am sure you will gain a lot of valuable info on this site, from all the knowledgable folk out there in our great country.

Poppy I see no reason for this thread to continue ad-infinitum. All the Nissans I saw from our (1) Ford Explorer and (2) Chrysler 300C were in fine form although no GU/GR models there. I did subscribe to a couple of US mags and finally found a Petersens 4x4 in the Vancouver Airport just as we left for home.
Scott and Gaby, if you are trotting around Vic, we would be proud to provide you a warm bed and some Aussie EO hospitality and I can show you the shed where I injure myself from time to time :0)
I can understand why the Hand Warmers are onthe back of the Nissans over there. I would rather PUSH A NISSAN THAN DRIVE A TOYOTA - Good to see that passion is universal ;0)

Get a copy of the
Cape York Adventurers Guide . Excellent for planning a trip with pretty much everything one needs to know including details of the return boat trip. Have a read then come back to the
forum for any specific current info.
In general allow a minimum of 2 weeks on the Cape between May to Sept. Try avoiding the school holidays..........it's packed.
Cheers Craig....................

Welcome to Oz Scot & Gaby,
Loved driving the Rockies, hope you enjoy the outback as much.
My tip; Before you head off on any
camping trips in Oz get yourself a copy of "Camps 4", it's the bible. It has all the
camping locations info that you'll need to plan you trip. The best $50 you'll spend. I think it's for sale through this site, otherwise newsagents, bookshops,
camping shops etc.

Hey I met a couple of Canadians out on the CSR at
Well 12 this year eh. Buggers followed me for weeks drinking my Baileys, eating my bread and stalking camels at every opportunity! Turned out they were crazier
explorers than I was...eh! Welcome aboard "Canada 1". Come and play in 2008.

Funny you should say that Mick O. We also met up with some Aussies at
well 12 and the buggers kept following us around wanting our Baileys too. Apparently one fellow lost his glasses, camera, and l believe his jacket. You didn't see these items along the Canning did you? Crazy Buggers. I hear that they got lost west of
Rudall River somewhere. Sure hope they made it out.
