LG TU550 & Vista don't work!

Hi all,

It's late but we're finally on our 6 month trip around Oz with the kids. Before we left I had purchased a new laptop and Vista was already installed. I originally wanted to stick with XP but thought that Vista has been out long enough for most companies to update their software for it. Not so!

Went into the Telstra shop and told them I wanted a Next G phone for travelling so it had to be used as a modem (using their casual data packs; $29 month for 80MB for us) and I wanted one that could be hooked up to a car kit/charger/external antenna.

Didn't like the big and bulky 'Telstra' phone and the Nokia as yet hasn't got a car kit that I've mentioned. So I got the LG. I sort of forgot about the Samsung in case you're wondering.

Got home, put the phones CD into the laptop and a nice message pops up saying it's compatable with Windows XP and below. Bugger. Back to the shop. They tell me I have to contact LG who will send out a CD with updated software. Go home, call LG and no there is no updated software and don't know if their ever will be!

Back to Telstra shop (a closer one this time), tell them my story, they had no idea and after a lot of research from shop manager I have now have the Nokia 6120 that works beautifully (using it now) and I'll have to wait for the car kit.

I assume they're expecting people to use their USB or card modems and sign up for 24 months as they didn't know too much about using phones as modems. I was in a little disbelief about the whole thing and LG?

I'll write again about how my coverage goes as we tour around Oz.

just as an update on the Nokia, there is a car kit available. In fact there are a few. You will need the Force brand cradle (it seems robust enough). It has an inductive coupler on the back to give a coupled connection to external antenna.

The cradle a socket in the bottom which can either be wired to the bluetooth model of nokia car kit (or you can use any other bluetooth car adapter and then use a cigarette lighter adapter to keep the phone on charge). There is also a socket for usb data connection.

One problem with the 6120 and the Nokia bluetooth kit is echo back to the caller. (Not sure of other bluetooth units) There is a firmware update available for the phone which will fix this however.

I have this phone and are having problems with Bluetooth. My firmware version is 3.7 and the software updater says there is no firmware upgrade. How did you get yours upgraded.

I had an existing CK-7W car kit with bluetooth communications which I also use with a Nokia 6021 GSM phone.

The Force Technology cradle for the 6120 Classic enables charging and connection to an external aerial via a purpose designed inductive coupler built-in to the cradle.

Communication with the CK-7W is via bluetooth.

I updated my 6120 to version 4.21 just before Christmas Day and this has definitely fixed the echo problem. The firmware update was only released by Nokia on Thurs 20th Dec.

The CK-7W is an excellent car kit that is now definitely compatible with the 6120 in all respects

The firmware update (last time I checked) can only be currently done by visiting a Nokia Care Centre. They will do it in around an hour and there is no charge for the service.

The Nokia Care Centre in Adelaide, is in Hindmarsh Square, next to the RAA's Head Office.

Oh, just be sure you back up your phone before getting the upgrade done. The phone will be restored to "factory default" during the process. Nokia Data Suite (a free download) provides this capability.

Vista won the "most underwhelming technology release" award for 2007!!

Recommend people dont touch it until SP1 proves its worth - and any shop who tells you you cants get XP any more are LIARS!

Most of the existing soft ware that ran happily on windows 2000 and XP will not run or will only partially run on Vista
They ( MS ) expect you to buy all new software
There is a Sansung down load for the K3 if that is what you are talking about

Most people experience problems attempting to run Vista on old hardware (technology) for which there are no suitable Vista drivers. There is a 'compatability' option that can be chosen, somehow 'emulates' earlier version of Windows and allows (some) software to function on Vista.

If you like Microsoft checking your computer 30 times a minute then go for Vista. Some of the reasons it is crap are:

Runs slow due to constant checking by Microsoft. Every little bit of software / program / music / move etc that you install is checked to see if it is pirated or unlicenced. Store bought and licenced software will sometimes not install as Microsoft thinks it is pirated. Quite a few manufacturers are slow to release updates to make their software/drivers compatible with Vista due to the security of the OS.

BTW this is regardless of what hardware is used.

I don't like it at all due to the Big Brother checking that it was mainly developed for.

Did you know that Vista is a partnership between Microsoft and the film/music industry to stop all unlicenced music and video downloads etc?

Place the cursor on the desktop Icon, do a 1 right click on it, select properties, click on Compatability, put a tick in the little square where it says Compatability Mode, select Windows XP in the drop down menu, click on APPLY / OK.
