Unbelievable run out of cooper's

Submitted: Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 23:50

John R (SA)

There's not a whole lot of point to this post, except to share my shock at the km I got out of a set of Cooper AT.

The original road tyres came off the Hilux at 30 000km. Not entirely warn out, but I needed something which can cover off road as much as on road.

Whacked on the Coopers, and have just changed them . . . at 115 000km, so 85 000km. If I'd rotated them a bit more religiously, I reckon I might have got another 10-20 000km.

$250 for a tyre is a bit of money, but quite frankly when they go that far it's worth the money.

Its in for me. I just bought an 80 series with BFG's on it and if the white lettering was facing out I would have paid somebody to change them.

Ok so cosmetic I take it. I had the special wheel balance done on mine by Bob Jane where they spin the tyre on the rim to balance it better some thing like that. My mate had a vibration in his patrol and after getting this done after I told him about mine he said the vibration has totally gone. Was an extra $16 per wheel. Rip off or not ?? dont know but have no vibrations through steering but didnt before getting the bf's fitted so not sure but worked on the patrol after he had just a normal balance done. So hows the new/old job going Scott ?? Regards Steve M

I would never waste a Friday night sitting in front of a computer, hence my staying quiet. To be more truthful 2 of the said tyres are still on the vehicle being used for to and from work duties and have done about 25,000 now but will not be used for our next trip.
Reason, one of the tyre lugs split right down to the steel belting on the Gibb river road. Went to make a claim only to be told that this is normal wear and tear. Yes I know I have told this story before but when people rave about a product it is also important to have a look at the support from that company, in my case I got none at all.
I don't follow all that business about BFG's and which way round the tyres were. I have my tyre's fitted by professionals and I trust them to fit them properly.

Went fox shooting last night, same vehicle as mine ( and the same year, and after-market suspension, in fact ),,, and grip in wet slippery paddocks..

What an incredible difference, and he had BFG muddies, and they were actually quieter on the road, than my coopers, and almost had as much grip.

Changed my mind, now maybe I do not have to get rid of my back-breaking Navara ,, !!! I wonder if SWMBO will agree

My Cooper STs have done around 83,000 kms now, and may get another 5k out of them. Interesting to read other feedback about their roughness; I thought it may have been the OME suspension on my Prado or that I run the STs at 40 psi on highway. Can't fault the longevity that the Coopers have given me.

My first set of ATR went 85K on a Nissan Patrol with about 20% off road.
Second set on a Cruiser ute have just clocked 45K with 50% off road! No wear & tear
The off road capability or grip is very average so my next set will be ST's.
Yeh you gota put up with alittle extra noise and minor rough ride but if your going off road a decent percentage of the time its worth it. Unless you can afford 2 sets of tyres and rims...
My ute although 12 months old is a rough & noisy ride anyway.

I don't doubt some are happy with their Coopers ST but I am not. Under 40 000km from them. Started chipping lugs off literally the first time I engaged low range. Continued to chip and tear every time i worked them hard.

Out of 4 tyres one ripped the sidewall (quite easily I may add) during a low range hill climb, one blew whilst towing on bitumen and the other went out of shape and would have blown very soon if i hadn't taken it off.

I have seen two Cooper ST blow on other vehicles without obvious reason whilst driving on bitumen. May just be a coincidence but I haven't seen any other tyres blow like this during my travels.

My conclusion: they are fine if all you do is drive on bitumen or dirt roads. But as soon as you engage that little gear stick and give the tyres a bit of stick, they run away crying to mum.

On my hilux I was paying $150 a trye and getting as good if not more K's as Coopers. Rotated every 10K and check pressures.
Once you get around 100K or more on a tyre the rubber hardens and they get slippery in wet.
I have always maintained if you look after them any half decent tyre will come up trumps. Coopers advertise full page adds in all major newspapers and 2 to 3 page ones in magazines and disguise them as articles. Why? Good products dont need advertisement unless its because people tire of the brand due to sisatisfaction.
Do a search on Coopers through this and other forums and see how many complaints there are. It's all a big con.

I also have a Hilux with 58 000 on the original ( from Thailand ) Bridgestone H/Ts. Just measured the tread remaining at 5mm front and 5.5mm rear, so at least 20k left. How did you manage to wear out the originals so quickly, then get 3x the ks from those magical tyres? I guess I should rush out and get some, as on your figures I will get 3 x78000 or 234000 on mine! Vehicle is dual cab diesel 4wd with canopy and drawers etc always at least 2.2 tonne.

I always get confused with these posts. If you are travelling on bitumen all the time buy a softroader. 80,000+ kms on tyres - who gives a toss unless you're driving on road/dirt tracks all the time. Why did you buy a grippy tyre in the first place?? why buy AT, ST, etc and spend 30,000kms or so with little grip. Sure it's legal tread still.
If I buy a 4x4 for travelling, towing work then yes I would care, but my 4x4s do this and what they're designed for. And I wouldn't be riding around on bugger all tread.
I bought an 03 Hilux Sr5 v6 new with the standard Bridgestone Dueler HTs on them. They were crap. I seriously got 27,000kms out of them before almost illegal tread depth. Mine is the V6 and I don't drive slow, so maybe that had something to do with it. I then bought Cooper ATs and got 40,000kms out of them. I then changed to Cooper STTs and got approx another 40,000kms out of them. I now have new Cooper STTs and it has 115,000kms total. I like the STTs.
On my Prado I replaced the standard crap with BFG AT and love these tyres. In my opinion they are better than Coopers. I don't know how many kms I've put on them. Its an 04 petrol Prado with 113,000kms and have done thousands of off road kms on the BFGs. Quiet and impressive grip. Just thinking though - i might have 40,000+ on these since June last year and they're in pretty good nick. I might get another 10,000 or so.
You can have them when I'm finished and get another 50,000kms on them.....

I agree with cookymonster. If your tyres have 5mm tread left, they are more than due for replacement. For on road they are legal but regarding safety I would imagine they need changing. Would you be confident taking them on a dirt road or a long trip?

Also regarding tyre age, I believe the rubber starts to deteriorate after about 5 years so are probably not that good for trailers either once you have "finished" with them.

John I'm certainly glad you had an excellent run but this thread seems to epitomize the build quality of Cooper tires. "I got 115,000km...........I only got 15,000!" Some people swear by them while others give them away due to their poor reliability. I don't know if its a problem at one factory or a quality control issue at certain times but for me, travelling to remote areas as I do, I simply could risk fitting them.
The km's or tyre damage any individual gets is fairly irrelevant anyway. Any real comparison needs similarly loaded vehicles travelling the same route. On any central Oz trip I've done in convoy, those with Coopers have sustained more chipping & punctures than any other brand, the one exception being a set of Firestone tyres on an Explorer. On a Madigan trip the one & only car fitted with brand new Coopers got 3 times the punctures of the rest of the entire convoy! Unlucky......I don't think so.

When you pay $400 plus a tyre for tyres that are busting to make 25,000kms you know about it.
