Article Overview - Nilpena - A Pinch of Salt
This is one of the few access tracks to the shores of Lake Torrens. It is accessable via Nilpena Station View Full Article...
Followed most of this trek January 2009 without any dramas. We went as far as Limestone Road but went up into The Cobberas from Native Dog Flat. All roads in good condition. Scrubby Creek Track a little overgrown in places but only young saplings so limited to some custom "pinstriping". A bulldozer was working on Scrubby Creek near the Ski Hut Track junction so it should be a doddle now...
Descent down Six Mile Ridge is steep but the surface is intact.
Good swimming in Wheeler's Creek on the opposite side of the bridge from the hut.
Descent from Pinnibar to Tom Groggin is a tester too. Def dry weather only.
Worth a short detour to Dogman's Hut beside Tom Groggin Station.
Good camping around Charlie's Creek (between Limestone Ck and Davies Plains) although the 2003 fires got the hut.

I have had my morning coffee now and guess they were taken on your Jan trip. I was wondering about the fire regrowth. Looks like it is as bad as parts further east near Blue Rag etc. Are the trees completely dead or are they showing signs of regrowth life?

In far too many areas of the Victorian High Country, the trees ARE completely dead. Often after a fire, you see the eucalypts spouting epiphytes from the trunks and you know the tree will recover. Unfortunately, the 2003 fires were SO hot that a lot of the trees were "cooked".
The regrowth in many areas is actually thousands of new saplings from the ground, most of which are now between 1 and 2 metres tall. Of course, they'll eventually become trees but you'd have to think it's going to take another 20-30 years......

And speaking of boobooks, my son and I were camped at MacFarlanes Flat one night on that trip and during the night we heard deep growling sounds in the bush, followed by a piercing woman's scream. I had to pretend to be the brave Dad but sheeesh! I've since heard later that both sounds are made by the same animal, a Barking Owl.

Michael looks like a great trip, I am planning something similar in March / April.

A few questions,

Can you camp on the river near Tintaldra
How long was your trip
Did you do any fishing and if so any luck?

Clarke's Reserve is a great spot. See this thread here

We were on the road 4 full days, starting in Wagga and ending in Delegate.

Afraid fishing's not my scene, although we met 2 trout chasers from Tumbarumba who were heading home empty handed...
