Mine is aluminium bit I would say the process could be very much the same.
Cean up the rust with some wet and dry. make it nice and smooth so as the rust "holes" do not show through. Fill any holes you don't like with body filler.
Make sure the whole bar is cleaned properly. Use a cleaner that is compatable with the paint you are going to use. See the man at the "saturday" store. Spray all of it with at least couple of coats of spray etch and then a few coats of the colour you want. Use what they recommend cleaner and don't use the cheap cans.
This way you have the goods to touch it up later. Or you could give it to a
shop and get them spray or powder coat it for you.
I did the top and "back" where the lights shine in flat black touch up paint. Stops that bit of glare. Admittedly we are not terribly worried about the colour not being a "designer" match with the bonnett but this is a bush car not a Toorak tractor.
Did it over a weekend when the
weather was fine and NOT wind. Don't forget to cover EVERYWHERE that you do not want sprayed. Be meticulous with this. Nothing worse than getting overspray off the windshield let alone that white bonnet with black spots everywhere. Watch out doing it in an enclosed space. Its bad for your health and especially the garage where the fumes can find their way into the house. I bet the "boss" will kill you if they do.
Don't be worried. Its is quite easy and you can even get a thrill out of it if you are thus inclined.

and not a mark on it after our last trips. Seems even the stones and bugs did not chip this painting method. take your time and apply the coates as printed on the cans. I know what "us blokes" are like hen it comes to instructions HaHa.
