Cook Shire Council under compulsory acquisition took control of the Palmerville Maytown Road last Friday. I have confirmed with the shire engineer, that this means we can now travel on it without threat of being shot.

Well done - missed that one :-)

About time you would have to say - Now it will be good to confirm where it exits from the Mulligan Highway

Cheers Tony

Hopefully it will still be Whites Creek.
Last year I came out after the Realignment was done. It cut a lot of curves and deep gullys from the turn off to just past Adams dam. I'm not sure how it will cope with the wet though. I will be going back again May, June. Love that area, this will be my 7th or 8th trip there since 2004.

It doesn't. I runs from Palmerville to Maytown only. To exit to the Mulligan Highway you need to go south across the Palmer River on the gazetted road to the Mulligan Highway or go north along the very adventurous Laura Coach Road.

Hi David, so what roads are actually opened. Is it the track form Maytown to Palmerville and beyond or just to Palmerville.
Is the track in from White's Creek still open.

G'day Damien

Any tracks that were previously open are still open including the White's Creek one. This just refers to the track from Palmerville to Maytown which has been closed for ages.

G'day Olsens 4wd,
I drove the Laura coach rd and it was a fantastic drive. It makes you take your hat off to Cobb and Co coaches. It tested my gps out, at one place I had to drive down a rocky ck bed (and back) as it was difficult to see wher the track went.

From the Cobb & Co Book-- 'In 1875 Cobb & Co ran coaches twice a week from Townsville to Ravenswood then on to Charters Towers. Farther north coaches ran from Cooktown over very difficult terrain to the Palmer River Goldfields. From 1879, this service extended only as far as Byerstown; later a more suitable route was found via Laura to Maytown.'
How coaches with steel wheels could travel over the sloping rocky ledges, I found hard to believe, but they did it!

Cheers,
Bill

G'day David,

Good news I think! But isn't this the same councile that won't open Cape roads due to their gravel tif? Does that mean instead of getting shot you'll only be fined instead?

Not sure what to make of all this Cook Shire stuff but I am travelling north in August and hope it has all blown over by then. It must be a real nightmare for the commercial guys that have to try and make a living while all this mistery remains.

BTW I did the Cobb and Co track in 1993 and was thoroughly way over my head at the time - didn't even have time to take photos.

Kind regards

The council have told me, we can travel on it. It is not one of the roads in the gravel tif.

Why not write to them as I did and tell them what a mess they made of the Starke- Wakooka- Kalpower road and it would be good if they never touch it again.
