Skytrek currently closed!

Have been to Willow Springs Station for the weekend and found out while talking to the owners that they have been forced to close Skytrek as of last Thursday (22nd April) for the time being.

This has nothing to do with adverse weather however but a dispute with a particular Sporting Association that owns adjoining property and which part of Skytrek traverses.

This Association apparently has jacked up their fees that Willow Springs pays them for access to their property to the extent that Willow Springs management have refused to pay the increase. The result was this Association locked the access gate to their property and thus shut down the Skytrek route.

Willow Springs pay all Public Liability costs and maintain the entire track at their own expense, grading and repairing sections as necessary.

What does the owners of the adjoining property do?
Suck as much money as they can out of the Skytrek operation for no input of their own apparently.

Legal proceedings are imminent in an attempt to resolve the dispute over the fees.

We must have been pretty lucky - we did Skytrek on Wednesday!

We did notice that all locked gates had two labled locks - one opened by the Willow Springs key and one by the Conservation Area mob's key.

Carmel did hint that there was a problem with access, but was very helpful.

There are two sides to every story. Firstly, the association that own the land you are referring to, isn’t a sporting association is any way. It’s the Yellowfoot Rock Wallaby Preservation Association and the land in question is a conservation reserve.

I won’t say much more as legal action could be pending, but when you sign a contract and agree to pay a set amount, the contract is binding. If you decide a few years later that you don’t want to pay anymore, you have the option to terminate the contract, not just decide to stop paying.

It is a shame this has happened and hopefully it can be resolved sooner rather than later.

Chaz, I’m just wondering how/if the 4x4 community can help. Sounds like money is the issue. Do you have a feeling that the 4x4 community has not supported Skytrek in sufficient numbers? If the message was use it or lose it then really I think we need to hear that. Alternatively, knowing for example what the Toyota Club has been doing re Cactus clearing in the Flinders, can 4x4 community help Yellowfoot Rock Wallaby Preservation Association in some way that it would be able to offer more attractive terms to the station. Probably too sensitive to answer here but gee it would be so disappointing to lose the Skytrek experience. Cheers

Hi jdwynn,

Yes, probably too sensative to give an accurate answer, but the information that I’m hearing doesn’t suggest that at all and that Skytrek is well supported by patrons, paticularly in the peak periods.

There are several good locations for 4 wheel driving etc, and more people buying 4 wheel drives than ever, so one would think it a viable enterprise.

Bingo Nudie,

Now that you have mentioned it, that is the Association that I was told owns the land.

Seems to me Nudie IMHO thatnearly all the committee members on the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby Assoc are also members of the Sporting Shooters Hunting and Conservation Branch.

Makes one wonder doesnt it. And the facts are that the track doesn't even go in near the Yellow foot area. I seem to recall shotting the place clean of goats many years ago, last time I was there and did the track we seen goats in abundance.

Makes you wonder what all of the Bunkers is used for, maybe a new Goat protection area..LOL

Sand Man the only thing in your post that is correct is that legal action will be taking place, I would suggest that you need to be very careful what you say in a open forum, as Chaz has said there are two sides to every dispute

And you have information from the other side???

I have been careful what I have stated and have done so in the interests of 4WDer's who read this forum.

Bill, don't believe everything you hear..…especially if it is only one side. It is a pity it has come to this, but I would think that the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby Preservation Association would not close the gates with out good reason. Hopefully all parties can resolve the issue and reopen soon.

After run in with them whilst doing Skytrek a few years back and statements from them over UHF that if we didn't move away from 15mile we may be hit by stray bullets, I wouldn't put anything past some people who are given a dose of power pills.

I shot on this property when goats, etc were in plague proportions and to think that anyone to state they may be shotting ridge lines and watch out for stray bullets, I'm seriously at a lose for words as I was the day I was informed the message.

Just on another note about the Bungles, anyone have any idea when the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby Preservation Association repaired or replaced any fences? They certainly were in disrepair when I seen the 2 years ago.

Yep we did reply thats how we got the barrage of crap about stray bullets etc. Seems when we culled Goats, Donkeys, Cammels etc you never squeezed off a round unless you could identify your target and never ever on a ridge line. Funny thing was we had a SAPOL Officer with us who is very anti guns, and his statement was, "they wonder why they have the weapons and rights taken away"??

Well it's as true as your stories....lol.

Happy trekking everyone....and really I do hope they sort it out, so it can open again soon.

The information that was given to me did not mention a Yellowfoot Rock Wallaby Preservation Association or other Conservation mob.

I'm not going to name the person or the Association concerned as legal proceedings are in progress but the Association OWN the land in question regardless of what wallaby lives on it or conservation mob "walks" on it.

I don't think the issue is about any current "signed contract" but probably by a price increase on a contract renewal that Willow Springs regard as excessive and have refused to pay.

By the way, Willow Springs are advertisers on this site so all I'm doing is alerting potential visitors wishing to do Skytrek that they can't at present do so.

This is a different take from all the other lockouts!! Oh to be back in an open country again were everyone was welcomed and supported and we did the right thing in exchange. Too much public liabilty, idiots doing the wrong thing, no respect for property or hertiage and permit systems that requires a Phd to navigate. Watched some ANZAC documentaries recently that got me thinking what things would be like if the Japs had succeed in their endeavours. Raises all sorts of scenarios for a range of current day political sensitivities. I'll let you ponder!!

Totally agree Leigh, wonder if they will lock out the CFS if the place ever suffers a serious bush fire, and lets all hope it never occurs, because locked gates slow units up while using bolt cutters when trying to get to these areas to fight fire.
