On a recent trip to Innaminke, we came across a bus stuck in the mud, mear Merty Merty Station.

One very kind man, Doug Toms, who now is a frequent emailing buddy, was so desparately trying to do the job on his own.

Lyn and myself ventured along, and had to join in on the fun
Some mongrels just drove straight past... No spirit there !

It was caught on Video !

First few tries

The final extraction

And the best part of it was we made a life-long friend

Cheers

Go easy Peter
They were pensioners, and all so really greatfull

Some had dug, some had gathered sticks and branches, and there were still a few in the Bus.....( let's just call them "directors" )

Hopefully in another 20 years or so I am around and able to go on a ride too.
Cheers

The only reason I said it was because back in the late 70's we did the same, towed a full size coach out of a bog in western NSW with our FJ40.
When we showed up the driver was standing beside the bus, which was idling and asked if we could tow him. We hooked up and proceeded to bounce around on the end of the snatch strap. I had just assumed that there were no passengers (young and silly!) and I said to the driver that the coach was too heavy for us to pull which was when I suggested that could he lighten it somehow, hey presto 35 bods alight!
I then suggested he get as many as were physically able to push while we towed, which they did and out it came.
They had been there for 4 hours when we came along and he hadn't thought to get them out and push, maybe I wasn't so silly after all, he was old enough to be my dad.

Hi Bucky
Great for helping out but......................

Firstly I hope that it was not you on the shovel, while the bus driver was sitting in the drivers seat.

Did the tour bus drop his tyre pressures down to help in the recovery

Why did not the paying passengers help push the bus, instead of walking in front of your wife while she was filming.

You did a great job along with the kombi, but without knowing the full details, sometimes those outback tour bus drivers can be real cowboys, and know it all...NOT.

Well Done Bucky.

Cheers

Hi Joe n Mel
Paying or not paying, there is an old saying...Many hands make Light Work" Bucky did what we all would do I hope, but the extra push would have made all the difference.

I have had 2 situations in past years.

The first time when we helped snatch people out, the moment the strap was off, so were they off and not a word of thanks. I was that cross that if we came across them again I would have left them where they were bogged, but we never saw them again.

The second time on the Birdsville Track, there was a small Toyota Coaster Bogged. They had been there for 3 hours (Group of 15 travelling Christians)
A number a vehicles had passed during that time and not one vehicle stopped to help them out. Seeing a large group of people stuck, we pulled up and with all their help, I had them snatched out and they were ready to go again. If they did not all help out, it would have been a very big ask for my Pajero.

Cheers

Stephen

So true Warrie. I saw a group in Innamincka recently. The plane had buzzed the hotel to come and pick them up but no one heard so the poor things had to trot down to the hotel themselves. They were knackered. Didn't move for hours. Just sat in the A/C staring at each other and nursing a beer.

and that they seem to be now, all "older" people (used to call em "old farts" but i am gettin old ) and they are reluctant to move when they have paid top dollar for a trip to sit on there bums and let some one else do all the hard work ..... i know what ya mean Stephan, i would help, even if on the trip it would be part of the adventure but that is why we are out in our own cars cause we WANT to get stuck and smell the roses, they dont ..... :-)

Go easy guy's
The bus was ful of pensioners

Those that could do things had already done what they could, when we turned up.

That little Kombi of Doug's did an amazing job.

A great job but perhaps a sack or something on the snatch straps.

A youg guy was killed not to long ago when a fitting let go and a strap and the fitting, ( towball???) went right through a Patrol and only slowed down a bit when it took most of his head off.
Doesnt look like the bus tyres were soft either Probably had the usual 90lb in them.

Poor little Kombi will be 6ins longer now LOL

Have to say the kombi was pulling harder and using the snatch better than the patrol.

Well done Bucky & partner. Thank goodness for the torque of that VW!!! I suppose you'll want one now before the Grenade goes bang!!! Only joking LOL. The day will come when fellow travels will not be bothered to help others...hopefully a long way off yet!! Out of interest Bucky...are these coaches 4 X 4? Did this guy have low tyre pressures & carry any recovery gear. What about sat phone or communications.....I just wonder about some of these tour operators!!

Orejap, I saw one of the Outback Spirit coaches up at Marree the other week.
They are quite new Mercedes 4 X 4, but I don't know how much recovery gear is in them.
I was told they had 16 of them, so you would think they would know how to equip them for that sort of work.

cheers

Doug's Combi did the clutch, directly caused by helping...I think it went approx 2 weeks later

I did 5th gear, on the way home...
A totally unrelated incident, so whilst the grarbox was out, I had the clutch replaced.

over 1/2 shot anyway

Hi Bucky

Great to see some people are still maintaining that Australian ethic of helping others in need.

I congratulate you.

I did see comments about not having a towel or such dampener on the snatch strap. Could be dangerous.

David

When will people learn to take up slack on snatch straps, and not take a 10 mt run up...
It is that that causes all the damage.....

The Bus was a Merc 4x4, and the driver told me that they always just give it to the vehicles, in mud, and they almost always get thru..
In this case he lost steering, in the mud, and was heading for a tree, so he lifted his foot, rather than crash.
A smart move..

Sat phones were used, and before help from Merty Station could get there, we rolled there
They were there for 2 hrs.

Yep loved the kombi.
The vehicle of choice many moons ago chasing waves.
None of the nonsense around nowdays was availabe and we went places people wouldn't contemplate in fancy decked 4x4's in modern times.
