Mount Stirling is an area used during winter for cross-country skiing and is therefore quite mountainous. There is a loop road running around the mountain and during summer it would be possible to drive a 2WD car around the mountain (check road conditions first), but after any rain or snow the road turns to 4WD only and is closed as part of the seasonal road closures in Victoria, generally from the day after the Queen's Birthday long weekend until November.

The advantage of having a 4WD is the ability to perform a number of diversions away from the loop road across the top of the mountain. Visiting places such as Craig’s Hut, famous for it's appearance in the great Australian movie, ‘The Man From Snowy River’. Walking around the back of the hut or even inside, you quickly realise that this is definitely just a prop. The good people from the Mansfield 4WD Club and CFA 4WD Club maintain the hut.

The trip to the summit of Mount Stirling is also a worthwhile diversion, which can be reached by following the 4WD track past Craig’s Hut. If the weather is kind you will be rewarded with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and of the skiing village at Mount Buller.

Other possible diversions from the area are down to Kings Hut, or Pineapple Flat (on the Northern side) or Binderee Falls and Pykes Flat, on the southern side. Both of these make excellent extensions to the trek and allow you to continue on travelling through the high country to other areas.

Camping in this area is just a matter of finding a nice place to pitch a tent or a swag. Good areas are available in either Pykes Flat or the Kings Hut/Pineapple Flat area. Due to the mountainous terrain there is only limited places available on Mount Stirling, but if the weather is fine these should be sufficient.

Travelling Tasmania with caravan, hiking boots & tinnie - a work in progress
A record of our eight weeks exploring Tasmania Day 1. Our trip began on the 22nd of January when we set out from our home on the South Coast NSW for Melbourne where we were to board the Spirit of Tasmania the following evening. We overnighted at Murrungower Picnic area on the Princes Highway some 20 kms east of Orbost in Victoria, arriving there mid afternoon.
WA September-October 2009
4 September – Hay Left home near Canberra under ‘John Constable’ clouds and passed through Gundagai, Junee, Coolamon, Narrandera to reach Hay. The country was green and lush with lots of sheep and some cattle all the way to Narrandera. Once on the Hay Plain (I don’t know where it officially starts but my feeling is it starts at Darlington Point and ends just short of Balranald) it looked as it usually does – flat with irrigation channels here and there and occasional rice paddies,
WA - Kalbarri, Kennedy Ranges, Karijini to Kalgoorlie and many places on the way. Winter 2009
June 10th Kalbarri Yesterday we took the road north from Geraldton and turned west at Northhampton to drive along the coastal route to Kalbarri. What a wonderful feeling it was to be back on the road with the van in tow and giving passing travellers 'the wave'. We had originally thought about staying a few nights between Geraldton and here however having been held up for a couple of weeks with the car troubles we changed our mind.We arrived at Port Gregory mid morning and had a brief look out to sea.
Seven Days in the Victorian High Country
SEVEN DAYS IN THE VICTORIAN HIGH COUNTRY January 2008 Have just returned from a 7-day journey through the magnificent Victorian High Country starting and finishing in Bright. From Bright we travelled to the roundabout at Porepunkah, below the high walls of Mount Buffalo. This is the Buckland Valley Road that we followed for some time before turning right onto the Goldie Spur Powerline road.
