 Description

The Holland Track is the longest cart road ever made in one stretch in Western Australia. It is a unique route that was created by pioneers in 1893 to enable prospectors arriving at the port of Albany to shorten their trip to the Goldfields by more than a fortnight. But the route was soon forgotten as prospectors used the newly built railway line to travel to the Coolgardie Goldfields and John Holland was never given any recognition or recompense for "services rendered" to his country for his efforts. The north east portion was slowly reclaimed by the bush, whilst the south western section was overtaken by pastoralists and their farmlands for nearly 100 years.

Then in 1992, a small group of enthusiasts understood the importance of the Holland Track and planed to re-cut the track so that it wasn't forgotten for ever. In doing so, they have given us the chance to retrace the footsteps of the important pioneer John Holland and Co. and to marvel at his incredible feat. In opening the route, we now have a unique 4WD track that allows us to experience the beauty of isolated camping in this long forgotten area that still contains wonderful relics of pioneering days.

The Holland Track begins in the heart of the Southern Wheatbelt region and heads in a general north-easterly direction into remote bushland and eventually meets the Great Eastern Highway at Coolgardie in the Goldfields. Although much of the southern half is now incorporated into the present road system around pastoral lands, you can still find many points of interest pertaining to Holland and his party with numerous commemorative plaques too see, heritage signs to follow, and many nice campsites to enjoy.

You will find these trek notes follow the route as faithfully as possible, and they should because the author was personally led to each site by Graeme Newbey, who together with researcher Adrian Malloy, are the men whose efforts we thank for re-opening the Holland Track.

 Things to See & Do

Emu Rock - WA   RatingRatingRatingRatingRating
Mountain,Peak,Hill Camp Free Point of Interest Walk Track
Excellent bush camps everywhere and you could never not find a spot out of the wind. It is a huge rock surrounded by Sheoaks and clear areas for even the largest group.
Wave Rock - WA   RatingRatingRatingRating
Mountain,Peak,Hill Point of Interest
Wave Rock attracts an amazing 130,000 visitors per year, which is incredible given it is more than 330km from Perth and is located on the outskirts of Hyden, a tiny West Australian township that was only connected to the main electricity line in the 1990s. Wave Rock is a granite cliff about 15 metres high and 110 metres long.
Holland Rocks - WA   RatingRatingRating
Camp Fee Point of Interest
Situated by the very edge of the Holland Tank Rd and clearly visible is a large concrete water tank - but it was not put here or used by John Holland.
Thursday Rock - WA
Camp Free Point of Interest
Just a short 50m stroll on flat level ground will take you from the trail head to the base of the rock. From here it is a relatively easy rock climb to the summit, marked by a cairn.
Agnes Gnamma Hole - WA
Point of Interest
The Centenary Expedition named this site for Agnes Holland, wife of John Holland. It is thought she was the first woman to travel the track when she accompanied her husband in December 1893. Her grave is with John's in the Coolgardie Old Cemetery.
Impressive Cairns - WA
Point of Interest
Many people believe that this is the site of Krakouer Rock but in fact it is the much larger rock just a few hundred metres further along the Holland Track form this site. Impressive cairns have been laid here - and it's a really nice spot.
State Barrier Fence (Southern End) - WA
Point of Interest
Following the Holland Track travellers will pass the southern end of State Barrier Fence at this point. The Holland Track follows along the eastern edge of the fenceline for a short section.
Mallee Fowl's Nest - WA
Point of Interest
The mound of an abandoned mallee fowl's nest is located right alongside the Holland Track here and has been fenced by CALM to protect it from damage. An information signboard gives limited details. Mallee Fowl are the largest mound builders in Australia. The male builds the mound from dirt, sticks and leaves from the surrounding mallee terrain (mallee scrub).
Microwave Tower - WA
Point of Interest
A microwave tower
Gnarlbine Rock Well and Plaques - WA
Point of Interest
Plaques at this site read: "Explorer Charles Cooke Hunt first camped at this rock on August 16th 1864, noting that the water might prove useful. In 1888 explorer and prospector Gilles McPherson was saved by an Aboriginal boy named Toobey who led him to this well after he was unable to find water.
Old Bedframe - WA
Point of Interest
This rusty old bedframe lies alongside the Pidgeon Hole track. It's best seen on the return leg from Pigeon Hole and is on the right hand side of the track.
Krakouer Rock - WA
Point of Interest
No description entered. Enter description or photos.
Newbey Rock - WA
Point of Interest
Named after Graeme Newbey (a Broomehill farmer) who was one of the two principle men responsible for the re-opening of the Holland Track in 1992 after they cut back the bush as closely as possible to the original track after it had been reclaimed by the bush for over 100 years.
Victoria Rock - WA
Camp Free Point of Interest
Victoria Rock is located 45km south west of Coolgardie on the Victoria Rock Rd. This is the location where John Holland first sighted his destination, Bayley's Find, such is the view from the highest point of the rock. This waypoint is for the day use area, from where a trail leads to the base of the rock. Visitors are welcome to walk on the rock and make their own way to the summit.
Pigeon Hole - WA
Point of Interest
Whilst many will say this site is not worth the 18km round trip to locate and view the tiny gnamma hole, it's a quiet spot in the bush that few people bother to visit so it will suit some and there's a good story behind how it was refound by Graeme Newbey in 1994 after numerous failed attempts.
Gnamma Holes - WA
Point of Interest
These gnamma holes are located alongside the Bounty Mine Rd near the junction with the Forrestania - Southern Cross Rd. They cannot be seen when passing but if you stop and get out they are easily spotted. Take care with young children, these are quite deep and animals often become stranded (you may notice the smell).
Dragon Rocks - WA
Mountain,Peak,Hill Point of Interest Walk Track
No description entered. Enter description or photos.
Green Shed - WA
Point of Interest
This green shed is a useful landmark for navigating along Dragon Rocks Rd - Sandplain Rocks is nearby. Note that Dragon Rocks, although also just a few hundred metres away cannot be accessed directly as the path is blocked by station property and fences. An alternative route off Nth Road leads to Dragon Rocks.
Lake Biddy Historic Site - WA
Point of Interest
The now historic townsite of Lake Biddy was named after the nearby lake of the same name. It is said to have been named with the nickname of the daughter of Surveyor E. T. Morrow in the early 1920's. The townsite was gazetted in 1925. The Lake Biddy Hall which still remains in vacant ruin was constructed in 1926.
Original Holland Tank - WA
Camp Free Point of Interest
This is the site of the original Holland Tank built by John Holland in 1890, which in those days were built into the ground so water could flow and seep into them. Today, you'll just see an overgrown depression in the ground, but this is what Holland used to store water and was his base for his sandalwood pulling operation.
Holland Memorial Park - WA
Point of Interest Rubbish Bin,Tip
The Holland Memorial Park is the start point of the ExplorOz Trek Notes for the Holland Track. The park is located behind the Broomehill Library and Council Offices on Ivy Street, which runs adjacent to the Great Southern Hwy in Broomehill.
Broomehill - WA
Populated Place Caravan Park Cemetery,Grave Site Pub Service Station,Roadhouse Rubbish Bin,Tip Toilet

Mount Holland - WA
Mountain,Peak,Hill
The base of Mt Holland is a great spot for lunch or even make camp. There are plenty of good trees offering shade and there is plenty of room for even the largest of groups. A track goes all the way up to the summit of Mt Holland which affords panoramic views but there is only room for two vehicles at a time.
Diamond Rock - WA
Point of Interest Walk Track
This rock can be easily missed as it is not visible from the track. To access the rock follow the short 200m walk trail.

 Preparation

Preparation for this route should be as for any other remote 4WD track, including carrying sufficent fuel, water, food, supplies, communications gear, safety equipment and first aid, along with emergency backup supplies. Check your fuel range and plan detours for resupply at either Newdegate or Hyden. The terrain is dense in many places and the track winding with driver visibility impaired when passing traffic so a flag on your vehicle is recommended.

There are numerous tracks in the area and some may be unnamed or not shown on maps. A wise precaution is to get hold of some updated and detailed mud maps of the area. You could also get some digital maps of the region such as: Explore the Holland Track and Cave Hill Woodlines and you could load these into software-based navigation like OziExplorer, which incidentally should be already installed and running on your laptop. See our navigation articles for more information.

Be well prepared with a GPS, HF radio or Satellite phone as you may not see another vehicle for days. We advise that you refer to the latest information and advice about outback communications in the Communications Topic.

There may be risks with getting punctures, so please make sure you have adequate recovery gear and puncture repair kits. Travellers should read the 4WDriving Topic for related articles and checklists for vehicle setup and driver awareness.

Take plenty of time to explore Coolgardie, admire it's magnificent buildings and it's various museum's. John and Agnes Holland are buried in the pioneer cemetery.
Most travellers tend to camp at the well-known rock sites as these are well cleared areas suitable for large groups and most provide interesting options for bush walking, including easy climbs up the rock face to the summits. Some sites will pool with water in the gnamma holes and rocky surfaces after rain which provides additional interest. No site has facilities other than at Victoria Rock. Equally good bush camps can be found literally anywhere along the route of the Holland Track.

 Environment

Starting in Broomehill, the route wanders through farmland and salt lake country on a mix of gravel and bitumen roads to Nyabing. From here, the terrain begins to change to much broader valleys and longer flats and the vegetation mix begins to change as well. Farmlands continue with Sandplain Rocks and Dragon Rocks tracks re-routed in recent years to skirt private property.

Just beyond Emu Rocks you enter beautiful virgin bush and heath, and long sections of burn-out from bush fires. The track vegetation gets in close in places, and side mirrors and any protrusions should be brought in to minimise damage. During Spring, this area produces magnificent wildflower and flowering shrubs.

Once crossing the Hyden-Norseman Rd, there's more granite rocks and a huge Gnows nest (Mallee Fowl). After crossing the Forrestania-Southern Cross Rd you come to Mt Holland - which 4WDrivers can summit for excellent views of the area. Nearby are gnamma holes at the T-junction of the Forrestania-Southern Cross Rd and the Bounty Mine Rd. Holland described these as "a splendid supply of water". Unfortunately, most travellers with find the water putrid from animals that have fallen in. There is quite a bit of mining activity here, but a little way along the country changes back again and you soon come into the Jilbadji Nature Reserve. This 200,000 hectare reserve is set aside to protect flora and fauna some of which is found nowhere else. Watch out for the Thorny Devils as they inhabit this area.
Beyond here is heavily wooded and slow and winding and camps alongside the track are hard to find if you need a bit of room. The thickets of Gimlet are a treat to see with their red-brown bark in contrast to the green of their leaves and the understorey.

The numerous gnamma holes and water-harvesting systems that you will see on the main granite outcrops of the named rocks remind us of the importance of water for survival in the harsh bush. During times of rain, water will quickly pool on the surface of the granite rocks and can be used for fun with the kids, or to collect for your own usage just as the pioneers did to survive.

 History

On 14 April 1893, John Holland, Rudolph Krakouer, David Krakouer and John Carmody left Broomehill with 5 ponies, a light dray, a 100 gallon (450 litres) water tank and provisions for 5-6 months. Their mission was to cut a track through virgin bushland from Broomehill to Coolgardie providing a short cut to the Goldfields from the port of Albany. Using a small compass they aimed for Gnarlbine Rock, the goldfields main water supply. Holland would go ahead each day and scout for water and horse feed, while the others cut the track. They arrived at King Rock (now Emu Rock) on May 15th, Mt Holland around May 20th, Sandalwood Rocks on May 27th, Victoria Rock on June 14th and arrived at Gnarlbine Rock on June 16th. They reached Bayley's Find at Fly Flat (now Coolgardie) on June 18th, having covered nearly 330 miles (538 km) in 2 months and 4 days, cutting the longest cart road ever made in one stretch in Western Australia. Prospectors could now land in Albany and make their way to Broomehill and on up the Holland Track to the goldfields, cutting off more than a fortnight to their journey.

Some 18,000 fortune seekers used the track and teams laden with food, general stores and mining equipment made regular use of the track until the railway from Perth created Southern Cross and then eventually, Coolgardie. For nearly 100 years the Holland Track was forgotten - the north east portion was left to be reclaimed by the bush, whilst the south western section was overtaken by farmlands.

There are numerous plaques and memorials that today's travellers will find along the route to make rememberance to both John Holland's party and those that re-cut today's modern route for 4WDrivers. A memorial was erected in 1956 by the Katanning Historical Society to mark the site from which Holland and his companions departed in Broomehill; a commemorative plaque, paying tribute to the courage of these four men, has now been placed in each of the Shires through which the Holland Track passes; and numerous centennary plaques adorn the route laid down by enthusiasts in 1993.
