Wollemi National Park is only 100kms from Sydney and makes a great weekend trip because of its proximity. The Wollemi National Park consists of 492 976 ha and is the largest wilderness area in NSW — a spectacular maze of canyons, cliffs and undisturbed forest.

This trek begins in Windsor and ends at Newnes and covers some of the South Western side of the Wollemi National Park.

The road out of Newnes is unsealed and of varying quality. The descent is long, narrow and spectacular so drive carefully. Caravans/trailers are manageable but better in dry weather. Newnes is a good place to stop for lunch or camp overnight. Its located in the Wolgan Valley and is surrounded by high, inaccessible cliffs. Newnes was at one stage in the early 1900's a bustling mining town with its own railway system to transport the shale oil and later coal into Sydney. The Wolgan River runs through the old town and some ruins remain and its now part of the Wollemi National Park.

There is a camping area but no facilities are provided other than a pit toilet. Its advisable to carry your own drinking water. There are a couple of good walks to do from Newnes including a self-guided tour of the mining/town ruins and the Glow Worm Tunnel, formed for the old railway to pass through. Now the Glow Worm Tunnel is home to the larvae of insects who spin silken threads that glow a blue colour to attract mosquitoes.

Point of Interest
One of two now abandoned tunnels on the railway line, the Glow Worm Tunnel curves through almost 180 degrees and is subsequently very dark. Some days, you may find a small creek flowing through it.

Exploring England 2012 - London
. Heathrow at 6.00am saw us rather bleary-eyed but buoyed by a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The anticipated customs delays did not eventuate, and after trundling our luggage for what felt like miles we were eventually in a cab and on our way to Pimlico in central London, and our son Rob’s flat. Now Rob has done a fair bit of plane travel and knew from experience that the best way to avoid jetlag was to get adjusted to local time as quickly as possible. So he had a plan,
Tracks Close to Sydney - Dunn’s Swamp
Monday 26th March to 29th March 2012 Close to Sydney are many interesting places to explore. Once over the Blue Mountains we stopped at Lithgow nestled in a picturesque valley on the western slopes. A little history .... Not long after the first crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813 and the building of the road by William Cox in 1815 the lands around Lithgow were being settled and villages established.
Brief summary of our Big Lap in 2009
The Big Lap 2009 While my Blogs are not yet complete, here is a very brief summary of our 2009 trip from WA through the Northern Territory, Queensland, and returning via New South Wales, crossing the north west corner only of Victoria and on through South Australia. We took five months; most in the earlier states as time got away from us. This trip and my other travelogues in more detail are being progressively loaded onto Travelogues on Australia So Much to See as they are completed.
