Border Track

Border Track This track follows a section of the state border between Victoria and South Australia. A mostly sandy track with dunes provides you with a remote location for testing self and equipment without travelling deeper into the outback.

This Trek has been prepared as a leisurely, interesting, 3 day trip allowing plenty of opportunity to see and experience this area. Starting in Nhill, the trek notes head north to Lake Hindemarsh and to the dry Lake Albacutya before picking up the Murrayville Track near the Wyperfeld National Park. You will then skirt the Big Desert Wilderness Park and briefly enter the Murray-Sunset National Park and then follow the Old Mail Route where your trip ends in Mildura.

Note - it is possible to start the Border Track literally anywhere along the border, however note that some sections operate one way restrictions from North to South.

Go to top Environment

The environment is typical Victorian desert – Mallee country. Expect some scratching from Mallee scrub particularly in the Wyperfeld section and some parts of the Northern Border Track may be overgrown. Soft sand is to be found on the tracks as well as corrugations and hard gravel. Carrying a compressor may be useful due to the changing road conditions although keeping the speed down on deflated tyres will enable travellers to get by. If intending to camp along the Murray take a fishing rod and enjoy a break along this beautiful stretch of river at the end of a very sandy and dusty trip.

Go to top History

The border track is steeped in history largely due to the dispute which arose from the original survey completed between 1847 and 1850. The result is that the border is actually sighted some 3kms too far West. A fascinating account of this can be obtained from John Deckert at Westprint Heritage Maps if you manage to visit whilst in Nhill.

There is an abundance of wildlife to enjoy whilst undertaking this trip, so watch out for Emu and Kangaroo. Aboriginal rock holes can be found close to the junction with South Bore Track.

Yachtie's Travels
Well finally we have left on our journey around Oz. Our rig consists of a Discovery 4 and Roma 20 ft caravan. Our travels will take us west from Brisbane through Toowoomba along the Warrego highway to Charleville and then north to Lawn Hill west of Gregory Downs via Long reach, Winton and Cloncurry. From Lawn Hill we will travel back to Cloncurry through Mt. Isa, Camooweal, Tennant Creek and then head north to Darwin via Kakadu. We hope to be in Darwin by June.
Streaky Bay and Nullarbor Adventures (Week 3)
Week 3. From Streaky Bay to West Oz. On Monday morning (22nd April) we packed up from our overnight camp at Pildappa Rock near Minnipa. John and I managed a short walk up over the top in the early morning sunshine which was a lovely way to start the day. As we travelled South West, the showers returned intermittently. We were in Streaky Bay before 11am and our booked sites were already vacant in the Foreshore Tourist Park, so we were soon parked and once again ready to enjoy a new place.
Adventures from Mallacoota Vic. to Pildappa rock in SA.( Week 2)
LEAVING MALLACOOTA, VIA IMLAY ROAD TO ADAMINABY. 15TH APRIL. There was rain in the night and this morning the skies were grey so I felt ok about packing up and leaving a few days early. We have had the best week of weather that we have ever experienced there but it couldn’t last forever. Barb and Darrel were ready to go before us. We were still getting hitched up when they called past around 8.30 so we told them to go on ahead and they waited at the Princes Highway turn at Genoa.
Lance & Marion's 2013 Trip
Only 5 days before we head north for the vast desert spaces of Australia's outback via the Oodnadatta track, East and West MacDonnells around Alice, then out west for 1000kms or so along the Gary Junction track to meet the Canning Stock Route. From here we'll travel north to the Tanami and Halls Creek and then further on up to the Kimberley and Kakadu. We've booked Koolpin Gorge (hope the wet has receded enough for it to open) and also the 5 day Jatbula walk from Katherine Gorge to Edith Falls.
Surveyor's General Corner Part 4 An objective achieved
July 2012. We are now away from the tourist buses and heading down the Great Central Road driving West and about to pass through some of the prettiest scenery you can imagine. It is only about 180 kms to Docker River and the Kaltukajara camp ground from the Olgas. The road is looked after but constant traffic on the sandy surface creates corrugations, but this time they weren’t too bad and easily negotiated at 60 to 70 kph.
Surveyors General Corner Part 3 Beautiful Colours and not only in the Opal
We are now at Coober Pedy after a fabulous journey through the Gawler Rangers (part 1 Gems of SA) and then North via Goog’s Track (part 2 Sand and Gravel). Here a friend of ours showed us through her family underground home and the delightful scenery of a Coober Pedy sunset as we viewed it from the roof (hill) of her house, -- just magic – giving us a greater understanding of why people remain in this seemingly desolate outback town even after they have given up on the mining work,
Blog #2 - 2013 Outback Queensland Travel Plans and Kit
Plans are well advanced for my 2013 solo outback trip and further exploration of the sights and places this country has to offer – weather permitting. Cooper Creek in flood might be awesome, but … I intend to see Queensland first. I bought a good, second-hand Jayco Penguin Outback (a 13 foot Camper Trailer). I’ll soon set off on my “little” extended trip to see western Queensland via Longreach from Camooweal to Birdsville, and then eventually home along the Queensland/New South Wales border.
Western Australia Trip 2012 – Part 15 : Cape Arid to Canberra
. Our first afternoon in the Cape Arid NP was spent exploring the area around the camping areas. We had a look at the older “Council” campground, that is closer to the beach, more sheltered and possibly allows fires – but it does not have the views over the bay. We drove around to Dolphin Cove and Tagon Bay and walked some of the tracks there.their colourful faces. Our mental image of this area – of a dry and desolate place - was being rapidly reshaped.
Surveyor's General Corner Part 1 South Aust'n "Gems"
Our objective on this trip was to visit yet another significant point on the Australian continent, the last of the North, South, East and West points and the State Corners to be achieved. Surveyor’s General Corner is the point (or I should say points) where the WA, SA and NT states converge. With the relevant permits arranged, away were went five of us in three vehicles on what turned out to be a 7 week and about 8,000 Km journey. (From June 28th to August 22nd , 2012).
My SAC Hits the High Country
Posted originally by me on aulro.com.... What’s a SAC? It’s my Short Ass Car, a 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 all modded up which means it has A/T tyres and that’s it. The car has already done the Birdsville, Oodnadatta, Strzelecki tracks, Corner Country, Mt Dare, Simpson, Flinders Ranges, Warraweena, Arkaroola, Robe, Lake Eyre, Border Track through Scorpion Springs, Brindabellas and just about every track within 3 hours of Sydney. Time for the Victorian High Country. I’m taking a camera crew….a first for me :).
Western Australia Trip 2012 – Part 3 : Yulara to Warburton
. Our progress west from Yulara was predictably slow at first. But we did spend a while at the big Kata Tjuta viewing platform that gives such a wonderful view of the domes. And we stopped briefly at the entrance to the National Park where our permits were checked. And then we were off the bitumen. While John reduced the tyre pressure Val had time to look around. The view of KJ from an unsealed road seemed more authentic somehow, and the big camel prints right where we pu
Not Beyond Approach - A Quest for Mount Unapproachable.
Docker River was my departure point. I had arrived yesterday afternoon and after a brief tour of the town I camped in the local campground just west right before sunset. The views of the surrounding hills and mountains including Mount Hastie were spectacular and I somehow wished I was able to take the view back with me to Perth when I leave the area. The town of Docker River itself is in quite a remote location compared to most others.
