Morning all,

There's lots of advice here already on tent options, so apologies for some duplication. Here's the situation:
- 2 adults, 15 year old (now in a swag) and also 12 & 10 year old
- Camp 3 - 4 times per year - one longer period after Christmas then a few weekends or Easter
- 4WD canopy trailer with solar, fridge

We've had a Black Wolf 300+ Lite for 10 years. Easily 100+ nights. Floor no longer water proof (silicon or PU coating worn) few patched holes in fly and aspects of the fly no longer much water proof. Now put a tarp over it. Have all the awning walls to enclose the front area.

I would prefer a RTT on the trailer with annex but wife not so keen on that idea - in my mind this speeds set-up as no bedding for us required. Considered a camper trailer but probably not got the $ right now and I need the 4WD trailer for carrying stuff. Things I would like:
- Some separation for kids + adults - can just be partion
- I like the enclosed awning of the Black Wolf as you can store shoes etc there when it's raining
- I don't like that I need a tarp to keep it water proof
- Even when it was new there was also some water leaks in the rear corner
- Quick to set-up the base tent, but then by the time you've added the fly, awning, pegged out the ropes and then put up the tarp you are talking hours.
- Don't care much about the size or weight, got heaps of space
- I'm 6ft 6, so a 2m x 2m tent ain't big enough without my feet touching the ends. That's why we got the 300 instead of the 240.
- Got to be solid. Don't like the stress of "is my tent going to blow over in the wind". Thinking got to be canvas.
- Prefer a heavy duty type PVC floor over the PU coated nylon one on my current tent

Considering the following:
- Oztent RV5 (probably would need 2). Some people like em, but there's plenty of -ive reviews on product review with breakages in the windy. Costly, but appear you can join them together at the centre.
- Could get 2nd hand Black Wolf 300+ in canvas. They appear to have a heavier floor and I am assuming the canvas model is more waterproof / heavy duty compared to my current one. Also all my current awning walls would fit.
- Southern Cross. Not sure enough space in the Ultimate Trekker, so double ender? Then I can see issues as the awnings don't look to provide the degree of shelter to be able to store stuff in them
- Some sort of 2nd hand cabin tent (freedom etc). Lots of space, but set-up time for a weekend?
- Seen some Diamantina heavy duty canvas tents which weight a tonne.

Any other options I should consider? What are the experiences of family campers in the same situation with tents?

Cheers,

Tom

We have a Black Wolf 210, the heavy one, not the lite. Vinyl floor. It got a lot of use early on, but not so much now, but after 12 years still waterproof. And strong.

Was in Birdsville some time ago and went on a day trip to Haddons Corner. While gone BV had a dust/sand storm. On our return, every other tent in the campground was rolled up in a corner against a fence. Not our little BW 210 - still standing proudly out in the middle all by itself, undamaged.

If BW's family tents are as good as our 210, then I would find it hard to go past Black Wolf as a brand, but in the heavy version, not the lite.

Cheers

+1 - we've had great experiences with our Turbo 300, and in all types of weather.
Come any closer and I'll rip your throat out!

I had a southern cross tent. It was well built. Not doubt. But it was way to heavy and bulky. It would last forever but ridiculous.

I sold it and replaced it with a Darche Safari 260. There is a bigger one.

It too is well built but lighter and smaller to pack up. It will last me 20 years, not 40.

We've got a BW Turbo 300+, which we love when we're camping. Only issue is it's too big now for a smaller car we bought. If you're interested - where are you located?

Hi Tom,

You really can’t go past OzTent RV5 x 2 for what you are describing in my opinion. Heavy yes, but very quick to put up, particularly if you do not peg it down. Although pegging down really only adds about 10 mins to set up time.

I have camped with an RV4 & RV3 put together front to front when on Motorcycle camping trips with a mate. I also have the front walls to turn the awning into an annex.

Another second for the OzTent

We have had the RV4 for over 10 years and just brilliant.

My son has two OzTents which he sets up like those pics for his family of 5 plus dog. He has the awning walls and the drainage channel so the two awnings joined become a vestibule. A bit of effort to set up if you tie everything down for a long stay, but solid as a rock and roomy.

Check the best 4wd awnings here too. We bought the Darche Eclipse 270 degree and love it for a family of 5.

Thanks all. I do like the look of the Oztents. The inside is 2.6 x 2.6 - assuming you have to stay clear of the wall? Is the rear wall quite sloping?

Yes the back wall is sloping and no water buildup. One great investment is a fly, will keep the tent perfectly dry.

Even without the fly, they are 100% waterproof in the heaviest of rain.

If they are 100% waterproof, why is the fly a "great investment"? Insulation?

Hi Mark,

Yes, the fly adds a little gap between the roof of the tent on the sun to allow it to “breath” better, keeps it cooler in summer.

We have an RV-3 that is okay for 2 of us, with swag rolled out inside. Tried using 2 stretchers once, not enough room. Used it one night at Wyllie Scarp, blowing a gale & raining, just my stretcher & I. Wild ride all night, but the RV-3 survived!

Th Fly is not only great to keep the heat off, it also prevens condensation inside the tent.

We've had the Black Wolf 210 earlier (canvas) model and it has been great for about 12 years. Still in A1 condition, and we've used it for the Simpson, Ann Beadell, Arnhem Land etc. I think the tent will outlast its owners!!

Have a look at the different Coleman Instant Up tents. Light and compact . Less than 2 mins up and down. We used the 3 and 6 man versions for Cape York trips.
Affordable . Good head room.

Hey :) We've been researching the best roof top tents and we purchased the Darche Panarama. We also bought the Darche Eclipse as we found it to best 4wd awning
. We are a family of 5 so we also have the annex for the RTT.
