Single <span class="highlight">GPS</span> Unit for both town & country?

you could try , Garmin quest, GPS 276C Garmin 7200, these are all over the $1000 price bracket, all these will also do track log, plan your route, tell you what time is sunrise and sunset, they can tell you when the moon rises and when it sets, the Quest and 276C only show 2D where the 7200 I think does 3D view.

It all depends what you want the GPS to do

Do a search in this forum on using a PDA with or without inbuilt GPS and running Tom Tom for city turn by turn, and OziExplorer for country mapping. There have been some recent threads. It is all quite doable.

Inbuilt GPS means less wires in the cabin but the unit must see the sky at all times. Remote GPS via bluetooth means two components but the PDA can be used anywhere in vehicle.

If you want a unit for hiking, not sure on that one. need to be careful about battery use and I'd be guessing the simpler the unit the better - ie a dedicated GPS. My Garmin extrex is okay for hiking battery wise, no mapping on it though.

Try the Mio P350 PDA with 400Mhz CPU is probably the best "bang for buck" taht will do what you ask.
It can be bought with MioMap software for around $450.00, or about $300.00 with no navigation software.
TomTom 6 is very good for city & limited country driving, Route 66 is more comprehensive in country areas & adequate for city use, it also has some high country fringe tracks & even shows farm driveways, & the best thing is it's only $199.00
Being a PDA you can also use OziExplorer with your own maps.

Try Garmin Quest as it sat nav as well as having manual waypoints coordinates.

I have a garmin 60 and it does city and country spectacularly, no oice but hey a beep works a treat. U need to get City Navigator software with it but once u have it you'll be rapt

I drive a Prado120 turbo diesel, full tint, sovereign bull bar, 9000 winch, BFG A/Ts, safari snorkel, inverter, fridge unit etc etc.

I think it depends on the $$$ you want to invest for a GPS unit.

I recently purchased an ASUS 636N PDA GPS, currently running co-pilot for the tar( also the brindies runs) and OziExplorer for the dirt. It is a combined PDA/GPS unit and I am very impressed with it. I recently sorted out the COMs port issues with help from this forum and the more I use it, the more I am impressed. I managed to get hold of full NSW/VIC topo maps and run them under Ozi ( separate 2 gb SD card) and trialled them on a south coast (NSW) run just over a week ago. It uses moving maps and worked 100%. The cost of this unit is at the upper end but well worth it if you can afford. A new model has just been released with better memory, but the $$$ has also gone up.

Garmin Quest is the way to go. Have a look at GPS OZ their price is $845.00 and they'll install Track 4 Australia (upon request) at no extra cost.

As others have pointed out - have a look at one of I've had one for about 6 months now...best things since canned beer.

I recently had a look at ASUS R2H-it's a tablet notebook with 7" touch screen.I am seriously considering one of them .Has 60G hard drive.Is anyone famaliar with them ?Thanks ,
