A couple of questions for those of you who have converted existing second battery to use as auxillary:

Q1. How long have you had the conversion?

Q2. Have you experienced any problems with starting the TD on the main starting battery?

Hi No.1, a friend and I both converted our 100TDs in 2006 to 2 aux and 1 cranker but gave up on the 3rd battery 18 months ago. I now run a Delkor/Puma 27HR -710cca in N70ZZ as the starter and a Delkor/Puma 27DC36 Deep Cycle N70ZZ 115 AH as my aux, these are amongst the biggest and more powerful to fit in the standard holders.
I was starting from 1 original 450cca for 18 months till it died at 2 1/2 years and have no problems at all starting now.

Muddie, you say:
"I was starting from 1 original 450 cca"

Is the 'original' 100 series Turbo Diesel Cranking battery only rated @ 450 CCA ??

Yes but there was a pair, so its 900cca in standard configuration.
I separated them and ran 1 with my ARB 3rd battery as a pair of auxiliary batteries, this was not all that successful with different size batteries. I then changed to 1 big battery of each kind.

I did mine about 18 months ago, have had no probs apart from one original battery died about the same time.
I now have 2 Yaeusu Hybrids equiv to N70.

As for starting, well in QLD you dont exactly have to worry about cold starts.

However I have put a relay in so that when I turn the key to start it pulls both batteries in to start it .
Easily done and takes the load off one battery a bit.

When you do split them it makes the passenger side the main battery and you have to extend your alternator feed wire across to this one.

I used 8 gauge wire for this and 4 gauge stereo power wire for the connecting cables to the isolator which I placed on the inner guard behind the main battery .

About 3 hours work and its all good.

Hi

I converted mine in 2003 and ran it on original batteries for 12 - 18 months. Changed to 700cca starter and marine battery aux for trip to SA deserts. Original batteries were OK but last thing I wanted was to run out of batteries on a remote trip.

1- Had mine done for a about 18 months now.
2 - Original battery died after about 12 months, but it was only 450cca and it was still functioning (1 dead cell).

I used a redarc solenoid and had it wired so I can connect both batteries for emergency starting by pushing and holding in a button on the dash. I also fitted a 3rd battery and it is fine but in hindsight I'd probably just go for a very large capacity 2nd battery instead.

I could be wrong but seem to remember advice that two similar sized units are best but not essential.

On reading the Redarc instruction it does say dissimilar are Ok so maybe????????

untiill recently i fitted the second batery on police vehicles as a auxillary battery . i use a cole hersee switch instead of smart solenoids. (less for them to break!) have had no problems with them, and having seen these vehicles once sold after their service with the police they seem to be working just fine.no longer fit them to the 100 series as they now use prados and 70 seres. still use the cole hersee switching still with no problems. did and still do use a deep cycle battery as the second /aux battery

Member No1.
Because you say "existing second battery"are you talking about a 100 series or the new 200 series with 2 cranking batteries, as I thought that all the series before the current 200 series had only one battery with an aftermarket aux as an option or are you saying that your rig had two batteries connected in the starting circuit only that you now wish to split via Redarc or similair.
Cheers

AFAIK all 100 series TD has two cranking batteries.

the 4.5 petrol had 1 battery as does the standard diesel I think
